Role & responsibilities

MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) design for residential projects involves creating integrated plans for a home's comfort, safety, and utility systems, including HVAC, electrical wiring, and water supply. The mechanical aspect focuses on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) to ensure comfort, while electrical design covers all power and lighting systems. Plumbing design handles domestic water, drainage, and hot water distribution. 

Mechanical (HVAC) Design

  • Focus:

     Ensuring occupant comfort through temperature and air quality control, often using systems like split units or ductless solutions for residential spaces.
  • Key elements:

    • HVAC layout drawings:

       Depict ductwork, air conditioning units, and fans to ensure proper air distribution.
    • Equipment placement:

       Shows the exact locations of equipment like boilers, pumps, and cooling towers for proper installation and maintenance.
    • Energy efficiency:

       Optimizing systems to reduce energy consumption and operational costs. 

Electrical Design

  • Focus:

     Designing the power and lighting systems for the entire home, including outlets, switches, and other fixtures.
  • Key elements:

    • Lighting layouts:

       Planning for efficient and effective lighting throughout the home.
    • Appliance and outlet placement:

       Ensuring sufficient and correctly located power outlets for all appliances and devices.
    • Safety systems:

       Incorporating fire alarms, smoke detectors, and other safety-related electrical components.
    • Renewable energy integration:

       Planning for systems like solar panels. 

Plumbing Design

  • Focus:

     Managing the flow of water for supply, hot water, and waste removal within the home.
  • Key elements:

    • Water supply and drainage layouts:

       Mapping out the pipes for efficient water delivery and waste removal.
    • Hot water distribution:

       Ensuring hot water is delivered efficiently to where it's needed.
    • Fire protection:

       Integrating fire sprinkler systems, if applicable, as part of the plumbing design.
