POSITION SUMMARY:
The People Operations Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance and data integrity across Suna's People Operations systems and processes through routine audits and structured regulatory oversight. This role designs and executes audit methodologies, analyzes People data to identify risks or gaps, and supports U.S. compliance requirements across onboarding, payroll, and employee records. The People Operations Compliance Specialist partners closely with the People Operations team to mitigate risk, strengthen controls, and drive operational improvements, using strong analytical skills and intermediate Excel capabilities to support effective auditing and reporting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Design and Execute People Operations Audits
Tasks
- Develop audit frameworks and checklists for onboarding, payroll, employee records, and People Operations workflows.
- Perform routine and ad hoc audits to validate compliance with internal policies, client requirements, and applicable laws.
- Identify root causes of errors or non-compliance and document findings clearly.
- Adapt audit approaches as systems, regulations, or service models change.

- Regular completion of scheduled audits.
- Reduced error rates and repeat audit findings.
- Clear, actionable audit outputs that drive improvement.
2. Maintain Compliance Calendars and Regulatory Oversight
Tasks
- Own and maintain compliance calendars for U.S. People Operations requirements (e.g., reporting deadlines, filings, renewals).
- Track regulatory changes and ensure timely implementation of required updates.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure deadlines are met.
- Escalate potential risks or missed deadlines proactively.

- Clear visibility into upcoming compliance requirements.
- Timely updates to processes when regulations change.
3. Analyze Data to Identify Risk and Gaps
Tasks
- Use Excel (pivot tables, formulas, lookups) and system reports to analyze People data.
- Identify trends, anomalies, and discrepancies across onboarding, payroll, and employee records.
- Develop reports that clearly communicate risks and findings to stakeholders.
- Recommend data-driven corrective actions.

- Early identification of compliance or data risks.
- Clear, understandable reporting for non-technical stakeholders.
- Measurable reduction in recurring data issues.
4. Ensure Data Integrity Across People Systems
Tasks
- Validate consistency of employee data across HRIS, payroll, onboarding, and client systems.
- Perform reconciliations to identify and correct mismatches.
- Partner with People team members to correct errors and prevent recurrence.
- Support system clean-up initiatives as needed.

- Fewer downstream payroll or compliance issues caused by data errors.
- Improved audit readiness at all times.
5. Partner on Risk Mitigation and Process Improvement

- Collaborate with People Operations team members to address audit findings.
- Recommend and help implement process improvements or controls.
- Support documentation updates, SOP creation, and training as needed.
- Monitor effectiveness of corrective actions.

6. Support Internal and External Audits
Tasks
- Prepare audit documentation, reports, and supporting evidence.
- Respond to audit requests from internal stakeholders or external parties.

- Support follow-up audits or reviews as needed.

7. Document Compliance Findings and Recommendations
Tasks
- Maintain clear records of audit results, findings, and corrective actions.
- Communicate findings and recommendations to People Operations leadership.
- Track trends in audit findings to inform future priorities.
- Ensure documentation is accessible and audit-ready.

- Clear documentation supporting transparency and accountability.

Minimum Qualifications
3+ years of experience
in HR operations, People Operations, compliance, audit, or workforce administration.Hands-on experience conducting audits
or data reviews across HR, payroll, onboarding, or employee records.Strong analytical skills
, with the ability to identify trends, discrepancies, and risk in People data.Intermediate Excel proficiency
, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, and data validation.- Working knowledge of
U.S. employment compliance requirements
, including wage and hour, payroll, and employee documentation. - High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document and explain audit findings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting
staffing, EOR, MSP, or contingent workforce models
. - Exposure to
internal or external audits
, regulatory reviews, or compliance reporting. - Experience working across
multiple People systems
(HRIS, payroll, onboarding platforms). - Familiarity with
risk mitigation, control frameworks, or process improvement
methodologies. - Experience creating
audit frameworks, checklists, or compliance calendars
. - HR, compliance, or audit certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, CPP, or equivalent) preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit for 2 hours without standing, sit up to 8+ hours per day.
- Ability to engage fine motor skills such as typing and writing for up to 2 hours without a break, use fine motor skills for up to 8+ hours per day.
- Ability to see and read computer screen, employment documents and correspondence.
