Job Description

responsible for coordinating the entire patient journey from admission to discharge to ensure smooth and efficient patient flow within a hospital

Core responsibilities

  • Admissions coordination

    : Manages the patient admissions process, including handling intake from the emergency department, clinic referrals, and pre-scheduled appointments.
  • Bed allocation and management

    : Constantly monitors the hospital's bed capacity and determines the most appropriate placement for incoming patients based on their medical needs and acuity. Manages all bed requests, including internal transfers and repatriation from other facilities.
  • Patient flow optimization

    : Identifies and addresses potential delays in patient movement throughout the hospital, from the moment of admission to final discharge. Works to reduce waiting times and ensure patients are placed in the correct ward in a timely manner.
  • Discharge planning

    : Collaborates with the clinical team, discharge coordinators, and social services to expedite patient discharges. Helps with planning for post-hospital care, which can help free up beds for new admissions.
  • Communication and collaboration

    : Serves as a central communication hub, liaising with doctors, nurses, ward staff, administration, and other departments to facilitate patient movement and resolve bed management issues.
  • Conflict resolution

    : Handles and diffuses challenging situations involving patient admissions, transfers, or bed shortages, especially when the demands for beds are high.

Essential qualifications and skills

  • Education

    : A nursing qualification is often required, along with demonstrated experience in acute hospital care.
  • Experience

    : Significant experience working in a hospital setting, specifically in bed management or patient flow. Experience with relevant data analysis and information systems is also valuable.
  • Leadership

    : The ability to provide clinical leadership and guidance to ward staff regarding patient flow protocols is often a key part of the role.
  • Problem-solving

    : Must be able to think logically and strategically while working under high pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Communication

    : Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are needed to effectively negotiate with and manage a wide range of staff, patients, and family members.
  • Resilience

    : Must be able to work under pressure and in stressful situations, particularly during peak periods of patient activity.
