Job Description

1. Job Summary

Hospital Biomedical Engineer

The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise across a wide range of medical devices, understand the criticality of medical equipment uptime in a clinical setting, and be passionate about leveraging technology to enhance healthcare delivery.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Strategic Planning & Technology Management:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) for the hospital.
  • Partner with clinical departments and leadership to assess technology needs and plan for strategic equipment procurement.
  • Manage the entire equipment lifecycle: specification, evaluation, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and replacement.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for medical equipment, including capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational maintenance costs.

B. Maintenance & Operational Efficiency:

  • Establish and oversee a preventive maintenance (PM) schedule for all medical equipment to ensure maximum uptime and reliability.
  • Perform and supervise corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on a wide array of medical equipment (e.g., patient monitors, ventilators, defibrillators, anesthesia machines, lab analyzers, imaging equipment*).
  • Manage in-house repairs and coordinate with external OEMs and service providers for advanced repairs and annual maintenance contracts (AMCs).
  • Maintain meticulous records of all maintenance activities, service reports, and equipment history.

C. Safety, Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Ensure 100% compliance with all regulatory standards related to medical equipment (e.g., NABH, AERB for radiology equipment, FDA/CDSCO).
  • Conduct routine safety and performance inspections of all medical equipment.
  • Investigate and report on device-related incidents and near-misses, implementing corrective actions.
  • Manage the medical equipment calibration program to ensure all devices are accurate and fit for clinical use.

D. Training & Development:

  • Train clinical staff (doctors, nurses, technicians) on the safe and effective operation of medical equipment.
  • Train and mentor the in-house biomedical technician team, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
  • Stay updated on emerging medical technologies and industry best practices.

E. Inventory & Vendor Management:

  • Create and maintain an updated inventory of all medical assets, including technical specifications, service history, and status.
  • Liaise with equipment vendors, suppliers, and service providers, evaluating their performance and negotiating service contracts.
  • Manage the inventory of critical spare parts and tools required for in-house repairs.

3. Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Qualification:

    Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Certification:

    Certification in Biomedical Equipment Technology (CBET) or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Experience:

    8 - 12 years

    of progressive experience in maintaining and managing medical equipment, with

    a minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role within a hospital or healthcare setting.

  • Non-Negotiable Experience:

  • Proven hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of critical care equipment (ventilators, patient monitors, defibrillators, infusion pumps).
  • In-depth knowledge of medical equipment safety standards, regulatory compliance (NABH, AERB), and risk management.
  • Experience in planning and executing the installation and commissioning of new medical equipment and technology.
  • Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

4. Competencies and Skills

  • Technical & Analytical Prowess:

    Exceptional ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Strategic Thinker with Hands-on Execution:

    Ability to develop a strategic technology plan while being personally involved in critical repairs.
  • Excellent Communication & Training Skills:

    Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical clinical staff effectively.
  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making:

    Ability to work under pressure to resolve equipment failures quickly to minimise clinical impact.
  • Meticulous Attention to Detail:

    Precision in maintenance documentation, safety checks, and compliance adherence.
  • Vendor & Project Management Skills:

    Ability to manage service contracts and equipment installation projects.
  • Proficiency in CMMS, MS Office, and technical documentation.
