I) JOB SPECIFICATION:
Responsible for direction, organization and strategic planning of the nursing unit within a hospital. Evaluate nursing staff performance. Collaborate with nursing staff, DNS & NS in the coordination of patient care.

Nursing Staff are the First Level Professionals in a Hospital. Nurses provide direct patient care, and take care of the Ward Management and supervision. Nursing Staff should be in uniform at the time of marking their attendance and should keep punctuality in time and duty.
Should be responsible for:
01. Abide by all rules & regulations of the hospital.
02. Report 15 minutes prior to the scheduled shift commencement for ensuring proper
handover and takeover during shift change in the unit.
03. Direct Patient care (Should be totally responsible to the patients allotted to her)
04. Carry out procedures and ensure completion of admission formalities.
05. Ensure Cleanliness of the nursing station including Utilities and Safety in the Room/Ward for the patient.
06. Recommend/forward leave, duty off, and holidays of the staff under supervision to DNS by ensuring the application is complete, correct, substitutes are arranged and without hindering the normal functioning of the hospital.
07. Attend and ensure the nutritional need of patient, arrange and supervise dietary services (Co-ordination with Dietitian).
08. Attend doctor’s rounds and carry out all the treatment instructions.
09. Maintain safety of Ward Equipment's, ensure cleanliness of utensils such as sputum cups, urinals, bed pans, kidney trays, etc, and food trays and utensils.
10. Maintain and keep up-to-date stock register of all articles, equipment's, consumables handed over, and assist in stock verification.
11. Maintain all records and registers of activities duly completed, signed, and counter-signed by in-charge, DNS and Nursing Superintendent.

- Administer injections and intra-venous infusion.
- Administer intra-venous blood transfusion under supervision of the medical officer in emergencies.
- Assisting doctors during rounds and carryout all treatments and instructions, assisting in diagnostic procedures.
- Perform simple diagnostic procedure, urine analysis, estimation of Hb percentage, etc.
- Collecting and sending specimens for diagnostic procedures.
- Recording of vital signs, temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressures.
- Performing gastric lavage, giving enema, etc.
- Prepare patients for operation and make sure that the patient is transferred to the theater with Case records, signed consents, X-ray, ECG, scan results, etc and medications.
- Sending files for discharge procedures.
- Collecting discharge summary and handing over to the patient with discharge advice to patients / family members.
- Preparation of cotton balls, gauze pads, etc, cleaning of articles and sending them for sterilization.
- Shifting patients to rooms, OT and LR in trolley or wheel chairs.
- Take care of patient’s eyes, ears, back, bowel, bladder, perineum, etc., whenever needed.
- Observe patient’s condition regularly, and take suitable actions accordingly, and/or report changes to the ward-in-charge or doctor.
- Give expert bed-side nursing care to all patients.
- Impart (only) essential health education and discharge advices to the patients and family members.
- Meet emergency situation promptly. Keep every drugs, maintain emergency tray, and equipment's in the ward.
- Administer oxygen, Ryle’s tube insertion for feeding and aspiration and others for problem based patients.
- Filling and maintaining of all Case Records such as Case Sheets, Temperature and Vital Charts, Input/Output Charts, diet sheet, doctor’s order sheets, nurses records, etc with dates, time, names and signature clearly written.
- Give appropriate last care to the dying, record details in register, arrange for ambulance etc.
- Supervising the above and taking the responsibility of the assigned ward completely.
- Any other responsibilities as and when assigned by the hospital authority.
