ROLE PURPOSE

Head of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platforms

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Define AI/GenAI technology vision & strategy aligned with overall DD&IT and business strategy; work with DD&IT AI leads in business-facing functions to secure sponsorship and develop a joint enterprise roadmap
Pro-actively evaluate, implement and scale AI/GenAI Platforms and Novartis-specific accelerators to integrate with existing systems efficiently
Establish a governance framework for controlling technology proliferation and measure Return on Investment with tangible KPIs
Adopt product mindset and agile methodologies to support Proof of Concepts (PoCs) and Minimal Viable Products (MVPs) for new AI/GenAI use cases, emerging models and frameworks. Establish and govern process to qualify successful PoCs/MVPs for scaling
Ensure clear communication and stakeholder engagement to familiarize organization on AI/GenAI platforms and availability of technical capabilities, develop training materials
Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among different teams working with AI/GenAI platforms, ensuring consistency and alignment across the organization
Establish clear objectives and drive governance processes within DD&IT for managing priorities, risks, with a strategic foresight and cross-functional mindset
Stay informed on industry AI/GenAI trends, engage with communities of practice, and understand opportunities for technology partnerships in close collaboration with DD&IT Architecture leads
Align with Enterprise Data Management strategy and principles, develop optimized data collection and preparation processes, ensure data quality for AI/GenAI solutions
Operationalize AI/GenAI platform support and drive continuous improvement, work with Infrastructure and End User Services function to fulfil performance and monitoring needs
Ensure compliance with Novartis AI policies and frameworks, implement robust data protection measures, support security audits and vulnerability assessments, jointly with the DD&IT Information Security & Compliance function

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Ability to drive strategic technology decisions and demonstrate technical expertise
Support PoCs, MVPs, projects and programs related to AI/GenAI platforms according to agreed quality, schedules and funding principles
Stable and secure operations of AI/GenAI platforms
Degree of automation and user satisfaction of AI/GenAI platforms
Transparency on AI/GenAI platform capabilities and monitor adoption metrics

JOB DIMENSION

Financials: oversee activities of up to 10m investments per year across functions
People: 60+ DD&IT internal employees and external employees as needed
Complexity: Global, cross-divisional, cross-functional coordination, vast stakeholder landscape
Influence: 20+ key global stakeholders across DD&IT and business functions
Impact: across all the locations where AI/GenAI platforms are impacting processes

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

Education

University degree or equivalent. Master’s degree is desirable.

Professional

20+ years of experience in managing technology platforms and driving operational excellence
Deep experience and knowledge of AI/GenAI technology

- Knowledgeable on AI and GenAI platforms, tools, architecture and solution delivery

- Familiarity with architecting and developing complex AI/GenAI solutions including experience with cloud computing platforms like AWS and Microsoft Azure

- Experience with NLP, FMs, LLMs, SLMs and other GenAI models

- Understanding of how to deploy LLMs and use of APIs to build solutions

- Familiarity with the model development lifecycle, such as ML/ML Ops/LLM Ops

- Software Development experience using Agile Methodology and DevSecOps tools

Experience in Pharma regulatory & compliance processes is desirable
Strong technology delivery, program management skillset is required
Proven communication skills in a global matrix organization with excellent presentation skills in abstracting problem statements and preparing executive messaging
Experience in leading cross functional IT teams and managing relationships with diverse stakeholders, fostering a strong collaboration mindset
