Country:

Deadline:

Fields:

Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Energy SciencePhD Position: Electrochemical Modeling of Electrode Potentials in Rechargeable BatteriesUniversité Paris Cité invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the group of Professor V. Balland and Dr. B. Limoges, within the ITODYS laboratory (TERE team). The research will focus on the rationalization of electrode potentials of insertion materials in rechargeable batteries, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between electrolyte concentration, solvation effects, and electrochemical performance.

Scientific Context

Battery performance is closely linked to physicochemical processes at the active material/electrolyte interfaces. In both Li-ion and aqueous rechargeable batteries, phenomena such as solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation and hydrogen evolution at the anode are critical to efficiency and cycling stability. Recent insights into ion solvation, especially in highly concentrated electrolytes, have revealed new pathways for optimizing electrode potentials and battery performance. However, a comprehensive electrochemical model that describes the coupling between solvation and electron transfer is still lacking. This collaborative research project, funded by the French National Research Agency, aims to develop such a model, incorporating desolvation and ion insertion phenomena to better predict and understand electrode potentials in various battery technologies.

Research Project

The selected PhD candidate will:– Investigate the electrode potentials of cation-insertion materials (e.g., TiO₂, LiFePO₄, Prussian blue analogues).– Systematically examine the influence of electrolyte concentration, counter-ion, and solvent on the equilibrium potential of these electrodes.– Develop mechanistic models to rationalize experimentally observed variations.– Perform electrochemical characterization of electrode materials and quantitative analyses of electrolyte properties, including assessment of cation solvation environments.

Requirements

– Strong background in electrochemistry and physical chemistry.– Prior experience or keen interest in electrochemical charge storage systems, electrolytes, and electrode materials is advantageous.– Motivation to explore fundamental scientific questions at the interface of chemistry, materials science, and energy research.
