Job Description

The Data I/O Operator is responsible for managing all incoming and outgoing data for studio projects, including footage, renders, assets, and deliverables. This role ensures secure, efficient, and organized data transfer between internal departments, clients, and vendors while maintaining high standards of data integrity and confidentiality.

Role & responsibilities

1. Data Management & Transfers

  • Handle secure transfer of data (footage, assets, renders, and deliveries) between internal and external teams.
  • Manage data import/export via FTP, Aspera, or other transfer tools.
  • Track, verify, and log all incoming/outgoing data accurately.
  • Ensure data integrity through checksum validation (MD5/SHA).

2. Storage & Backup

  • Organize and maintain data on servers following studio folder structure and naming conventions.
  • Perform daily or weekly backups of active and archived projects.
  • Coordinate with IT for storage management and archive retrieval.

3. Coordination & Communication

  • Work closely with production, artists, and clients to ensure timely delivery of files.
  • Maintain version control and accurate documentation of data transfers.
  • Communicate file delivery and update status to concerned teams.

4. Security & Compliance

  • Adhere to studio data security protocols and NDAs.
  • Ensure no unauthorized data access or sharing.
  • Maintain audit trails for all data transactions.

5. Technical & Operational Support

  • Monitor transfer tools and troubleshoot issues with IT/pipeline teams.
  • Assist artists in locating project data or retrieving archived materials.
  • Suggest workflow improvements for efficient data handling.

6. Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain daily logs of all data transfers and deliveries.
  • Update internal trackers and prepare weekly status reports.
  • Report missing or corrupted files promptly for resolution.

Preferred candidate profile

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree or Diploma in

    Computer Science, Information Technology, Multimedia, Animation, or a related field

    .
  • Candidates with relevant studio or technical experience may be considered even without a formal degree.

Experience

  • Mid-Level:

    24 years of experience in Data I/O or System Operations in a
  • VFX/Animation/Post-production environment

Technical Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with data transfer tools:

    Aspera, FTP, Rsync, FileZilla, ShotGrid, or similar.

  • Working knowledge of

    Linux/Windows/MacOS

    environments.
  • Familiarity with

    NAS/SAN

    storage systems and

    backup solutions.

  • Basic understanding of

    VFX file formats (EXR, DPX, MOV, etc.)

  • Knowledge of checksum and data validation tools (MD5, SHA).
