Job Description

Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, patient-centered ophthalmic care, including diagnosis, treatment, and surgical interventions. The Consultant Ophthalmologist will contribute to the development and delivery of ophthalmology services, participate in teaching and research, and ensure clinical governance and quality standards are maintained.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Diagnose and manage a wide range of ophthalmic conditions (medical and surgical).
  • Perform ophthalmic surgical procedures, including cataract surgery and other sub-specialist surgeries depending on expertise.
  • Conduct outpatient clinics, including assessment, investigations, and treatment planning.
  • Provide emergency ophthalmic care as required.
  • Participate in on-call rotas, if applicable.
  • Ensure accurate, timely clinical documentation and record-keeping.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.

Teaching and Training:

  • Supervise and support junior doctors, trainees, and other healthcare staff.
  • Participate in educational programs, clinical teaching, and workshops.
  • Contribute to the training and development of the ophthalmology team.

Service Development and Governance:

  • Contribute to service planning, development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in audit, research, and clinical governance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with national and local clinical guidelines and standards.
  • Participate in appraisal, revalidation, and continuing professional development (CPD).

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or relevant licensing body.
  • CCT in Ophthalmology (or within 6 months of obtaining) or equivalent specialist accreditation.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) or equivalent.
  • Proven competence in general ophthalmology and core surgical procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and continuous improvement.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: Up to ₹120,000.00 per month
