ABOUT THE KEN

The Ken is India’s first and largest subscription-based media company. Established in October 2016, we publish deeply reported, analytical and well-narrated stories every day. Our subscriber community, largely based in India, includes entrepreneurs and senior executives, venture capitalists, policymakers, MBA students, and teams across dozens of companies.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Bureau Chief is a dual role, split roughly 50:50 between mentoring and guiding a team of staff writers based in Delhi, and reporting and writing compelling stories on significant companies across assigned beats.

The role reports to the Editor, The Ken. The Delhi bureau covers beats including financial services, telecom, tech policy, consumer, and retail. The successful candidate must be eager to learn these areas and stay closely abreast of developments across them.

A strong Bureau Chief helps reporters identify larger stories within the daily news cycle, think through how to pursue and report them, and, at times, open doors to key sources. Earning the trust and respect of reporters typically comes from a strong body of published work, domain knowledge across industries, and a sharp sense of how to identify and tell the right stories at the right time.

EXPERIENCE

Ideally, 8–12 years as a reporter, some of which has to be in business news.

LOCATION

New Delhi. Expected to work from the office three times a week.

WHAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR

You will pitch and write ambitious, deeply reported stories of your own

You will oversee how many ideas your team members have at any given time and help guide them to meet more sources and have a pitched story at all times

You will oversee how their story progresses and flag any issues with it early on to the editorial leadership team

You will stay on top of news and developments in these areas and guide your team towards picking relevant new

You will work with the editorial leadership team to give feedback on stories of your team and improve The Ken’s editorial mix

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

This is a leadership role and will require the ability to manage multiple demands

Being comfortable with the unpredictability, speed, energy, chaos and bustle of a cutting-edge digital newsroom will be a plus.

Being able to establish trusted relationships with reporters and colleagues

Bringing domain knowledge, reporting and writing tips, or an editor’s eye into every story that passes through the newsroom
