Job Description

Purpose of the Job

The Traction System Engineer defines the architecture, the functionalities of the traction drives or auxiliary converter systems, and technically leads the engineering studies in order to reach performances in compliance with initial requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Gather and analyze external (customer, standards) and internal (rolling stock, renewable energy systems) requirements, and allocate them to the technical teams.
  • Define the architecture and functionalities of traction drives, auxiliary converters, and power electronic systems, considering high voltage system requirements.
  • Allocate transverse requirements (EMC, acoustics, reliability, safety, weight, efficiency) to traction or auxiliary functions in collaboration with experts and RAMS engineers, optimizing for cost and performance.
  • Ensure consistency and compatibility across all traction or auxiliary system specifications, reviewing Functional Requirement Specifications (FRS) and component specifications.
  • Organize, prepare, and lead system design reviews, ensuring alignment with high voltage and power converter requirements.
  • Build and maintain the Product Breakdown Structure for traction and auxiliary power systems.
  • Define validation strategies for traction and auxiliary systems, working closely with the validation team, including commissioning and fine-tuning of high voltage drives.
  • Identify technical risks related to power electronics and high voltage systems, and support the PrEM in updating risk mitigation plans.
  • Verify that functional and constructional configurations comply with technical and safety requirements.
  • Support customer meetings by providing technical expertise on high voltage systems, power converters, and VFD drive hardware.
  • Propose Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) improvements for traction and auxiliary systems.
  • Analyze technical issues during commissioning and reliability growth phases, proposing solutions for power electronics and high voltage hardware challenges.
  • Contribute to Return of Experience (RoE) processes, ensuring learnings are incorporated into Reference Solutions and documentation updates.
  • Participate in component selection, topology evaluation, and system optimization for traction and auxiliary converters, especially in renewable energy applications.

Mandatory Skills / Expertise:

  • High Voltage System Architecture for traction or auxiliary power systems.
  • Power Converter & Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) hardware design.
  • Component selection and topology selection for power electronics systems.
  • Experience in renewable energy or traction systems integration.
