Job Description


The Substation Design Engineer is responsible for creating layout drawings and performing calculations for substation systems, including protection. This role involves preparing technical specifications and Bills of Quantities (BoQs) to meet client and international standards, defining the scope of work, and conducting grounding analysis. Additional responsibilities include reviewing equipment and protection/control designs and mentoring junior engineers.
Desirable qualifications include holding a professional license, an advanced degree, knowledge of protection/control and related software, strong communication, analytical, and teamwork abilities, and proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office. The ideal candidate should thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Core Responsibilities
  • Preparation of general arrangement and elevation view, erection key diagram, trench plan, lightning protection layout, earthing layout, illumination layout, single line diagram, three-line diagram, protection line diagram, and control building layout.
  • Preparation of auxiliary load calculation, AC & DC cable sizing calculation and schedule, UPS, battery and battery charger sizing calculation, control cable schedule, direct stroke lightning protection calculation, earthing calculation, short circuit force, and cantilever strength calculation.
  • Preparation of technical specification of substation equipment.
  • Preparation of detailed BoQ which meets the requirements of the client, IEC, ANSI & IEEE standards.
  • Preparation of scope of work.
  • Grounding analysis using software.
  • Perform engineering calculations and reports.
  • Review and approval of all substation related equipment.
  • Review and quality assurance of protection and control design drawings ensuring both client and IEC, ANSI, and IEEE requirements are met.
  • Provide leadership, training, and mentoring to less experienced engineers and team members.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Knowledge of electrical substation equipment.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IBC, IEC, IEEE, and ANSI standards.
Technical Skills and Experience

Software Proficiency:

  • Autodesk AutoCAD
  • ETAP
  • PSS/E
  • PSCAD

Project Management:

  • Design experience in projects from conception to implementation.
  • Ability to coordinate with other engineers and stakeholders.

Renewable Energy Systems:

  • Understanding of solar energy systems and their integration into existing infrastructure.
Experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in design and engineering with power distribution and/or high voltage substations.
  • Experience in renewable (wind, solar & energy storage) will be considered an asset.
