Sr Manager Data Engineering

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Organizational Leadership: Work closely with senior leaders within the Research and Development Informatics function and across the Amgen India site to align engineering goals with broader organizational objectives and demonstrate leadership by contributing to strategic discussions
• Talent Growth & People Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of engineers, fostering an environment that encourages learning, collaboration, and innovation. Focus on nurturing future leaders and providing growth opportunities through coaching, training, and mentorship.
• Partnering with Agile Product Owners and Product Managers delivering and planning data and analytics solutions, you will lead the data engineering solutioning, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within scope, within budget and deliver real value and meet business objectives.
• Oversee the architecture, design, and implementation of scalable, high-performance data and analytic solutions that include data analysis, data ingestion, data transformation (data pipelines), and analytics. Promote reuse and FAIR data practices across the Research and Development Data Foundation.
• Manage the RunOps for data pipelines and analytics solutions constantly optimizing for reliability and cost optimization.

Basic Qualifications:

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Manager - Data Engineering to lead the design, development, and implementation of our data strategy. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of data engineering principles, coupled with strong leadership and problem-solving skills. As a Senior Manager - Data Engineering, you will manage and oversee the development of robust data and analytic solutions, while mentoring and guiding a team of data engineers. You will be responsible for leading the development, implementation, and management of data and analytics applications that support the Research & Development organization's data-driven strategic initiatives. You will continuously strive for innovation in the technologies and practices used for data engineering and develop a team of expert data engineers. This role will closely collaborate with counterparts in US and EU. You will collaborate with multi-functional teams, including, platform, functional IT, and business collaborators, to ensure that the solutions that are built align with business goals and are scalable, secure, and efficient.

Basic Qualifications and Experience

• Masters degree with 8 - 10 years of experience in Computer Science, IT or related field OR
• Bachelors degree with 10 - 14 years of experience in Computer Science, IT or related field OR
• Diploma with 14 - 18 years of experience in Computer Science, IT or related field
• 5+ years of experience managing a team of data engineers.
• 8+ years of experience in leading enterprise scale data and analytics solutions development.

Functional Skills:

Must-Have Skills

• Excellent leadership and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
• Experience working with agile development methodologies such as Scaled Agile.
• Good understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and data integration concepts
• Able to mentor team to develop appropriate Data Models for data analytics use cases.
• Hands on experience with big data technologies and platforms, such as Databricks, Apache Spark (PySpark, SparkSQL), workflow orchestration, performance tuning on big data processing
• Demonstrated proficiency in leveraging cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) for data engineering solutions. Good understanding of cloud architecture principles and cost optimization strategies.

Good-to-Have Skills:

• Experience with the Pharmaceutical and/or Biotechnology Research and Development data domains.
• Familiarity with ontologies, information modeling, and graph databases.
• Experience using graph databases such as Stardog , Marklogic , Neo4J , Allegrograph, etc. and writing SPARQL queries.
• Experienced with software engineering best-practices, including but not limited to version control (Git, Subversion, etc.), CI/CD (Jenkins, Maven etc.), automated unit testing, and Dev Ops.

Education and Professional Certifications

• SAFe for Teams certification (preferred)
• Certified Data Engineer / Data Analyst (preferred on Databricks or cloud environments)
