Role & responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor Blast Furnace process parameters through PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems.
  • Maintain stable furnace operation by controlling hot blast temperature, pressure, flow; top pressure and stock line levels; oxygen enrichment, steam injection, and blast volume; PCI (Pulverized Coal Injection) rate and distribution.
  • Ensure proper burden charging sequence and descent rate in coordination with the Stock House.
  • Monitor gas distribution (CO/CO ratio) and ensure uniform gas flow for optimal furnace efficiency.
  • Support achievement of daily hot metal production targets with desired quality parameters like temperature, Si, S, and P content.
  • Optimize coke rate and maintain high gas utilization efficiency.
  • Record and analyze burden composition and consumption data.
  • Assist in adjusting process parameters to ensure consistent and stable furnace operation.
  • Operate furnace control systems and handle alarms; record and analyze process data, trend charts, and alarm logs for abnormalities.
  • Coordinate effective communication between control room and field teams; prepare and update shift logbooks, cast details, and operational summaries.
  • Identify early warning signs of process instability such as hanging, slipping, or scaffolding; act promptly as directed to avoid disturbances.
  • Ensure safe and correct operational procedures during start-up, shutdown, or emergency conditions.
  • Participate in restoring furnace parameters following disturbances or downtime.
  • Collaborate with Cast House for casting schedules and metal tapping coordination; Stock House for charging sequence and burden control; Blower House for blast supply and temperature control; PCI system for coal injection management; and maintenance teams for mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation support.
  • Maintain clear communication during shift handovers to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Comply with all Blast Furnace safety procedures and standard operating protocols (SOPs); enforce strict PPE usage and adherence to Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and work permit systems.
  • Report unsafe acts, conditions, and near-misses immediately to the Shift In-charge; promote good housekeeping practices.
  • Support the implementation of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Maintain and update shift-wise log sheets, cast logs, burden charts, hot blast and top pressure parameters, gas composition, and furnace performance data.
  • Support preparation of daily and monthly production reports; ensure accuracy of recorded data for reliable performance analysis and management information system (MIS) reporting

Preferred candidate profile

Qualifications & Experience

  • B.E./B.Tech/Diploma in Metallurgical, Mechanical, Production, or Electrical Engineering from a recognized institute.

  • Engineer: 25 years of hands-on experience in blast furnace operation or control room monitoring.
  • Sr. Engineer: 5–8 years of experience in blast furnace operation, process control, and parameter optimization.
  • Preference for candidates with experience in integrated steel plants with blast furnaces of at least 0.5 MTPA capacity.
