Senior Resident - General Surgery

Role & responsibilities

Patient Care:

• Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments and patient consultations.
• Perform a wide range of surgical procedures, including elective and emergency surgeries, acting as primary surgeon for less complex cases.
• Manage post-operative care, including pain management, wound care, and monitoring vital signs.
• Perform rounds on hospitalized patients, reviewing medical history and treatment plans.
• Coordinate with other healthcare professionals like nurses, anesthesiologists, and specialists for optimal patient care.

• Surgical Skills:

• Assist in complex surgical procedures, gaining expertise in advanced surgical techniques.
• Lead the operating room team, ensuring patient safety and adherence to surgical protocols.
• Develop proficiency in minimally invasive surgical techniques (laparoscopic surgery)

• Clinical Decision Making:

• Interpret diagnostic tests and imaging studies to inform surgical decision-making
• Evaluate patient conditions and determine the most appropriate surgical approach
• Manage surgical complications and make timely decisions during procedures

• Teaching and Supervision:

• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior residents and medical students
• Teach surgical techniques and clinical management during rounds and case discussions
• Oversee the clinical rotations of junior residents, ensuring their learning progression

• Academic Responsibilities:

• Participate in research activities, including data collection and analysis
• Present research findings at conferences and publish in medical journals
• Attend medical conferences and workshops to stay updated on the latest surgical advancements

• Progressive responsibility:

  As a senior resident, the expectation is to gradually take on more complex surgical cases and leadership roles within the surgical team.

• Collaboration with attending surgeons:

  Senior residents work closely with attending surgeons to ensure high-quality patient care and optimal surgical outcomes.

• Continuous learning:

  Maintaining up-to-date knowledge in general surgery through ongoing education and training is crucial.
