Job Description

Role & responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

1. Electrical Operation & Maintenance

  • Ensure reliable operation and preventive maintenance of all HT/LT electrical systems, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motors, and control systems within the SMS area.
  • Maintain uninterrupted power supply to EAF, LRF, VD, CCM, and auxiliary systems.
  • Oversee operation and maintenance of Pump House drives, starter panels, and motors to ensure continuous water supply.
  • Manage Fume Extraction Systems (FES), ensuring optimal performance of fans, dampers, and bag filters.
  • Monitor voltage, load, and power factor to optimize power usage and minimize losses.
  • Implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules to enhance equipment uptime.

2. Power Distribution & Energy Management

  • Supervise HT substations (11kV/33kV) and LT power distribution systems for SMS operations.
  • Monitor major load consumption and identify energy-saving opportunities.
  • Coordinate with central electrical and utility teams for load balancing and synchronization.
  • Maintain and update Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), cable schedules, and protection settings.
  • Ensure calibration and healthiness of relays, breakers, and protective devices.
  • Drive energy conservation and power cost reduction initiatives.

3. Equipment Reliability & Maintenance Planning

  • Plan and lead preventive/predictive maintenance for all SMS electrical assets.
  • Approve maintenance schedules and checklists for critical equipment.
  • Collaborate with OEMs and contractors for overhauls and technical upgrades.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for recurring electrical failures.
  • Maintain availability of critical spares and support implementation of Condition Monitoring Systems (CMS).

4. Fume Extraction System (FES) Management

  • Ensure efficient and reliable functioning of the Fume Extraction System for EAF, LRF, and CCM.
  • Monitor draft pressures, motor loading, and filter performance for air quality compliance.
  • Manage maintenance of bag filters, ducting, fans, dampers, and electrical drives.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental norms and support system upgrades for performance improvement.

5. Safety, Compliance & Standards

  • Enforce strict adherence to electrical safety protocols, LOTO systems, and PPE usage.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments for substations and electrical installations.
  • Ensure compliance with Indian Electricity Rules and Factory Act standards.
  • Implement safe wiring and flameproof practices in hazardous zones.
  • Maintain 5S and housekeeping standards across all electrical facilities.

6. Process Coordination & Reporting

  • Collaborate with production, mechanical, and instrumentation teams for smooth plant operations.
  • Coordinate power load management during high-demand operations.
  • Support commissioning and startup of new or upgraded electrical systems.
  • Participate in daily/monthly review meetings and report on electrical KPIs, breakdowns, and action plans.
  • Maintain records of maintenance, downtime, and performance using SAP/CMMS systems.

7. Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead a team of engineers, supervisors, and technicians across multiple shifts.
  • Plan manpower allocation for operational and maintenance activities.
  • Conduct training programs on electrical safety, maintenance best practices, and protection systems.
  • Evaluate team performance and promote skill enhancement and accountability.
  • Foster a culture focused on safety, reliability, and continuous improvement

Preferred candidate profile

Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

  • B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering

Experience:

  • Senior Manager:

    1418 years of experience in electrical maintenance within SMS or heavy industrial environments (EAF/CCM preferred).
  • AGM:

    18–22 years of experience in large integrated steel plant electrical systems with exposure to HT/LT networks, utilities, and FES operations.

Industry Preference:

  • Integrated Steel Plants / Power-Intensive Manufacturing / Heavy Engineering

Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong expertise in HT/LT electrical systems, substations, and power distribution networks.
  • Hands-on experience with EAF, CCM, Pump House, and FES electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in electrical protection systems, MCC operation, and drives (VFDs).
  • Familiarity with SCADA/PLC systems, automation, and energy monitoring tools.
  • Excellent understanding of electrical safety standards and statutory compliance.
  • Leadership skills to manage multidisciplinary teams effectively.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and planning abilities.
  • Working knowledge of SAP PM / CMMS for maintenance management.
