Are you excited about working at the forefront of applied research in an industry settingThomson Reuters Labs in Bangalore is seeking scientists with a passion for solving problems using state-of-the-art information retrieval, natural language processing and generative AI. What does Thomson Reuters Labs doWe experiment, we build, we deliver. We support the organization and our customers through applied research in document processing, informational retrieval, and natural language processing. We work closely with product and domain experts to identify compelling solutions at the intersection of user needs and technical feasibility. Our team is responsible for designing the next generation of tax and accounting software for Tax Professionals and Corporates in the US, and across the global markets. We own AI innovation for Thomson Reuters core tax products, including CoCounsel for Tax , Checkpoint Edge , Cloud Audit Suite , SurePrep and ONESOURCE . Were seeking innovators to help expand our Document AI capabilities and impact. At Thomson Reuters Labs, we combine rigorous research with applied development to solve real-world challenges. From enhancing large language model (LLM) reasoning to creating new skills for task-specific applications, we drive impactful solutions for professionals worldwide.

About the Role As a Senior Applied Scientist , you will

Innovate Develop new skills and capabilities for Document AI, focusing on areas such as document classification, data extraction, and reasoning improvement. Lead research initiatives in LLM benchmarking, grounding, LLM agents, and enhancing the reasoning abilities of large language models.

Build & Experiment Design, test, and deploy state-of-the-art models that expand Document AI ability to address complex, real-world tasks.

Collaborate Partner with engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders to translate complex challenges into impactful solutions.

Mentor & Lead Guide and support junior researchers, fostering a culture of learning, creativity, and collaboration.

Communicate Publish findings at top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ACL, EMNLP, SIGIR) and contribute to patents, ensuring our solutions are cutting-edge and competitive.

About You Youre a fit for the role of Lead Applied Scientist if your background includes

PhD in a relevant discipline or Masters plus a comparable level of experience,

5 + years of hands-on experience building NLP / IR systems / Document Processing Systems for commercial applications,

Experience writing production code and ensuring well-managed software delivery,

Demonstrable experience translating complex problems into successful AI applications,

Professional experience scaling yourself and leading through others, in an applied research setting,

Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and analysis skills,

Collaborating with Product, Engineering and other business stakeholders in an agile manner to demonstrate value and iterate with customer feedback,

Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, or KDD. (Preferred)
