Scrub Nurse

The Scrub Nurse is responsible for preparing and assisting in surgical procedures under aseptic conditions. The role involves maintaining sterile techniques, managing surgical instruments and materials, and supporting the surgical team to ensure patient safety and smooth OT operations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Pre-Operative Duties:

• Prepare the operating theatre with necessary surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
• Verify patient identity, surgical site, and consent as per hospital protocol.
• Assist in positioning and draping of patients.
• Ensure all instruments and materials are sterilized and arranged appropriately.

2. Intra-Operative Duties:

• Act as the primary scrub nurse during surgeries, maintaining a sterile field throughout.
• Hand instruments, sutures, and materials to the surgeon efficiently.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs during the procedure.
• Count sponges, instruments, and sharps before and after surgery with the circulating nurse.
• Ensure all specimens are properly labeled and sent for testing.

3. Post-Operative Duties:

• Account for all instruments and materials used during surgery.
• Assist in the safe transfer of patients to the recovery area.
• Clean, disinfect, and prepare instruments for sterilization.
• Document the procedure details and materials used in the OT register.

4. Infection Control & Safety:

• Maintain strict aseptic and infection control practices at all times.
• Report equipment malfunction or OT hazards immediately.
• Participate in OT cleaning and sterilization routines.

5. Teamwork & Communication:

• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthetists, and other OT staff.
• Communicate any irregularities or patient concerns promptly.
• Participate in training, audits, and continuing education programs.
