1. Preoperative Responsibilities

• Sterile Preparation
• Scrub, gown, and glove in accordance with strict aseptic protocols.
• Prepare and lay out surgical instruments, drapes, and supplies required for the procedure.
• Ensure functionality and sterility of instruments and equipment.
• Patient Preparation
• Assist in positioning the patient safely on the operating table.
• Help with skin preparation and draping of the surgical site.
• Confirm surgical site and procedure with the team (WHO surgical safety checklist).

2. Intraoperative Responsibilities

• Direct Surgical Assistance
• Hand instruments, sutures, and other tools to the surgeon and assistant as needed (anticipating their needs).
• Maintain the sterile field and ensure no breach of asepsis.
• Count sponges, needles, instruments (with circulating nurse) before, during, and after surgery.
• Instrument Management
• Keep instruments clean and organized during the procedure.
• Handle tissue specimens as per protocol for lab analysis.
• Team Collaboration
• Communicate efficiently with the surgical team and respond quickly to intraoperative changes or emergencies.

3. Postoperative Responsibilities

• Instrument & Site Check
• Perform final counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps to ensure nothing is retained.
• Assist with wound dressing and safe removal of drapes.
• Patient Transfer
• Help in the safe transfer of the patient to the recovery area.
• Cleaning & Turnover
• Decontaminate and send instruments for sterilization.
• Prepare the operating room for the next surgery.

4. Documentation & Safety

• Record-Keeping
• Document surgical counts, instruments used, and any intraoperative events.
• Label and send specimens with proper documentation.
• Infection Control
• Adhere strictly to infection control guidelines and surgical handwashing techniques.
• Report and manage any breaches in sterile technique.
