Interpret diagnostic tests like echocardiograms, CT scans, MRIs, and angiograms. Determine surgical indications and risks. Preoperative Care Counsel patients and families regarding the procedure, risks, and outcomes. Collaborate with anesthesiologists, cardiologists, and other specialists for surgical planning. Optimize patients medically for surgery (e.g., control comorbidities). Surgical Interventions Perform surgeries including: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Valve repair or replacement (mitral, aortic, tricuspid) Aortic aneurysm repair Congenital heart defect repairs Heart and/or lung transplants Minimally invasive or robotic cardiac procedures Manage intraoperative complications swiftly and effectively. Postoperative Management Oversee ICU and ward recovery. Monitor for and manage complications (bleeding, arrhythmias, infections, graft failures). Ensure appropriate wound care, medications, and physical rehabilitation. Administrative & Academic Responsibilities Documentation & Records Maintain accurate operative reports and patient records. Ensure legal and ethical compliance with healthcare documentation. Teaching & Training Mentor residents, fellows, and medical students. Participate in academic sessions, workshops, and continued medical education. Research & Innovation Engage in clinical research and trials. Publish findings to contribute to advancements in cardiothoracic surgery. Quality Improvement Audit outcomes and participate in morbidity and mortality meetings. Implement evidence-based practices to enhance surgical success and safety. Professional and Ethical Conduct Adhere to high standards of surgical ethics and professionalism. Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, and healthcare teams. Stay updated with advances in cardiac and vascular surgery technologies and protocols.
