Job Description

Role Overview: An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Fellow to join Professor Simon Duckett's internationally renowned group at the Centre for Hyperpolarisation in Magnetic Resonance (CHyM) within the Department of Chemistry at the University of York. This full-time position is initially for 24 months, supporting the CEROC research project funded by the EPSRC. The project aims to study reactions involving alkene and alkyne building blocks, focusing on reducing waste by utilizing advanced NMR methods, including hyperpolarization. Key Responsibilities: - Prepare suitable 13C, 15N, and 2H labelled alkynes and alkenes for NMR sensitization through interactions with parahydrogen - Detect reaction intermediates in catalytic reactions using the prepared agents - Optimize hyperpolarization of molecular building blocks through NMR approaches - Identify routes for separation/storage of agents before introducing them into in-flow reactors for catalytic reaction exploration - Contribute to research outputs, collaborate with industry, publish papers, write grant applications, and actively participate in research planning and management - Supervise the work of others, provide expert advice and guidance, and lead research projects and proposals - Develop strategies for preparing complex organic molecules, introduce labels, work with industry on reactions, and secure funding for projects Qualification Required: - Undergraduate degree and PhD in Chemistry - Knowledge and experience in high-quality research, organic synthesis, catalysis, and techniques aligned to reaction monitoring - Proficiency in Magnetic Resonance and data collection, or willingness to learn - Ability to prepare complex organic molecules, introduce labels, and work with industry on reactions and project reporting - Advanced IT knowledge, strong communication and analytical skills, ability to write research work for publication and give presentations - Leadership skills, ability to supervise others, identify funding sources, and secure funding - Attention to detail, proactive work approach, and ability to plan and prioritize work effectively Company Details: The Department of Chemistry at the University of York is renowned internationally for its research and provides a supportive working environment for all staff and students to excel.
