Job Description

Production Manager Heavy Fabrication (Site Execution)

Key responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise heavy fabrication activities on live project sites (thermal power plants, cement plants, and related facilities) ensuring safety, quality, and on-time delivery.
  • Liaise with design, procurement, quality, and construction teams to translate engineering drawings into field-installed structures, ducts, supports, skids, and steel assemblies.
  • Manage erection and commissioning of mechanical equipment and structures (ducting, dust collectors, ID fans, screw conveyors, kilns, mills, fans, air pollution control systems) as per project scope.
  • Develop and monitor site execution plans, fabrication shop load, and field activities schedule; track progress against baseline milestones and ERP/Project management systems.
  • Review and verify material requirements, welding procedures, NDT status, fit-up tolerances, and alignment checks; ensure traceability and documentation (WPS/PQR, welding records, calibration certificates).
  • Implement and sustain safety, health, and environmental standards; drive 5S/lean practices on-site; lead risk assessments and toolbox talks.
  • Oversee quality control and inspection activities; verify dimensional control, weld quality, coatings, and surface treatments; manage non-conformance resolution and corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with codes and standards relevant to heavy fabrication (e.g., IS/IEC/ASME, petrochemical guidelines, local statutory requirements) and client specifications.
  • Manage subcontractors and field staff; handle manpower planning, training, performance issues, and grievance resolution.
  • Prepare progress reports, daily productivity logs, material consumption, and site installation data for client and internal stakeholders.
  • Support commissioning and performance testing; assist in handover and as-built documentation.

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Diploma or BE/BTech in Mechanical / Production / Industrial Engineering; additional certifications in project management or fabrication processes are a plus.
  • 5–12 years of hands-on experience in heavy fabrication, site erection, and mechanical installation in thermal power, cement, or similar heavy industries.
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication processes (cutting, bending, welding, roller/pan forming, spool fabrication), ducting, and structural steel erection.
  • Experience with on-site erection of equipment like ID fans, dust collectors, kilns, ball mills, conveyors, ducts, screw conveyors, and relevant sheet metal structures.
  • Proficiency with project management tools and ERP systems; ability to read and interpret complex 2D/3D drawings (AutoCAD, SolidWorks/3D models).
  • Practical understanding of welding procedures, NDT, alignment, vibrational checks, and commissioning support.
  • Leadership and communication skills to manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with clients and suppliers.
  • Safety-first mindset with knowledge of industry standards (OSHAS, ISO 45001, IEC/IS codes as applicable).

Nice-to-have

  • Hands-on experience with duct routing, dust collection systems, scrubbers, and air pollution control equipment in cement or power sectors.
  • Familiarity with field measurements, as-built documentation, and handover procedures.
  • Certifications in welding (MIG/TIG/ARC) or QA/QC, and familiarity with 5S/continuous improvement practices.

Location and work context

  • Based at or near project sites across India (e.g., cement plants, thermal power plants, and allied facilities); travel is common depending on project phases.
  • Typically reports to the Project/Construction Manager or Plant Head with dotted lines to Mechanical Engineering Lead.

Candidate profile (what to look for)

  • A hands-on, disciplined engineer who can bridge design intent with field realities.
  • Proactive problem solver who can manage field changes, material constraints, and safety concerns under tight deadlines.
  • Strong collaborator capable of coordinating with design, fabrication shops, QA/QC, safety, and client representatives.
