Job Description

The Collective Newsroom is looking for two producers to work based on the news desk for BBC News Bangla based in Delhi & Kolkata in India. The Producer will be responsible for error-free writing, editing and producing a range of digital content - in text, video, and audio formats for our Website, TV, Social Platforms and podcasts, to the highest professional standards. You will also be required to exercise editorial judgment of the highest standards in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.

It has more than 250 journalists and operational staff, bringing you distinctive, impartial and world-class content and is the BBC’s sole provider of content for its Indian language websites and social media platforms including English. Based in the BBC’s largest international market, we bring you the best of Indian journalism guided by the world’s biggest and most reputable news organisation. We provide digital, audio and television content in Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Telugu as well as English.

About BBC News Bangla

BBC News Bangla is the Bengali language service of the BBC World Service and was set up in 1941 for Bengali audiences in South Asia and worldwide. It provides up-to-date news and current affairs, covering both domestic and international news stories and is multiplatform, with a multimedia website with a focus on digital video, text, interactivity for both desktop and mobile platforms, and TV news programme. The service aims to make international news relevant to Bengali speaking audiences in both Bangladesh and India, and aims at bringing quality, impartial, original journalism with news and current affairs to the Bengali speaking region.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Reporting to the Team Lead, the Producer is responsible for originating and producing original stories from the ground or from across BBC output or agency sources.
  • Commission and select relevant materials ensuring they meet expectations of our audiences.
  • Ensure all content published on BBC News Bangla website and its social media platforms adhere to the BBC editorial and social media guidelines.
  • May be required to present live or recorded content online on BBC News Bangla social media platforms.
  • Seek ways to increase diversity in our workforce and ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.
  • Have effective coordination with CNR’s input desk to ensure the planning process reflects ground reality, producing unique content for the BBC News Bangla audience.
  • Deliver journalism of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources.
  • Ensure all content published on the BBC News Bangla website, social media platforms and TV programmes are without factual or grammatical errors.
  • Ensure effective use of resources and materials between Digital and TV teams.
  • Monitor developments/Breaking News from the region and around the world and publish appropriately with value addition and perspective.
  • Act as a bridge between team members and Editor to ensure desired results in terms of output and coordination.
  • Deliver to tight deadlines while maintaining quality and highest editorial standards.
  • At all times, carry out duties in accordance with the organisation’s health and safety policy.
Requirements


  • A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial digital journalism experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of analytics and audience engagement tools and strategy.
  • Understand the requirements of the BBC News Bangla audience and deliver to achieve its target.
  • Maximises opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent.
  • Ability to contribute effectively for the benefit of Digital and TV platforms.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improve diversity and understands how individual differences can benefit the Collective Newsroom.
  • Prioritises and plans activities taking into account all relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
  • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
  • To ensure all published content adheres to the BBC editorial standards and is without any factual or grammatical errors.
  • Flexible and adaptable to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
  • Sound understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to digital media.
