We are seeking a Principal Architect to lead the design and technical direction of our next-generation voice communications platform. In this hands-on leadership role, you will architect carrier-grade VoIP systems with high availability, low latency, and global scalability - powering mission-critical voice services for our customers. This is a hands-on leadership role where you guide architecture decisions, set best practices, and collaborate closely with Engineering, DevOps, Product, and QA teams.
• Architect & Implement VoIP Infrastructure: Design and deploy a scalable VoIP core using SIP-based platforms (e.g. FreeSWITCH, Kamailio/OpenSIPS) to achieve carrier-grade performance and uptime. Develop session management components including Session Border Controllers (SBCs), NAT traversal solutions, load balancing and failover strategies for high availability.
• Quality & Performance Optimization: Define standards for call routing logic, codec selection, and audio quality optimization (minimizing jitter, latency, packet loss) to ensure crystal-clear voice calls. Lead initiatives to enhance the scalability, observability, security, and resiliency of the voice platform.
• Monitoring & Incident Management: Implement monitoring and real-time debugging tools to continuously monitor SIP/RTP traffic and quickly troubleshoot issues in production. Provide technical leadership during major incidents, performing deep-dive analysis on call failures and coordinating rapid resolutions.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with backend and devops teams to integrate telephony services with provisioning systems, billing platforms, and analytics APIs. Ensure seamless integration of voice features into our broader product ecosystem.
• Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Evaluate and onboard new technologies whether open-source tools or carrier services – that can improve our platform’s capabilities. Stay up to date with industry trends (cloud communications, WebRTC, IMS/VoLTE, etc.) and drive adoption of best practices in VoIP architecture.
• Mentorship & Best Practices: Coach and mentor junior engineers and team leads on best practices and architectural standards. Document system designs, configurations, and troubleshooting runbooks to share knowledge and maintain high operational standards.
Education, Skills and Experience:
• Location - Ahmedabad
• Extensive Domain Experience: 12+ years of hands-on experience in telephony/VoIP systems or cloud communication platforms. Proven track record in designing large-scale voice infrastructure (carrier or enterprise level) that handles millions of calls or endpoints.
• Deep Protocol & Networking Knowledge: Expert understanding of SIP signaling and media protocols (SDP, RTP/RTCP). Solid fundamentals in networking (UDP/TCP/IP, DNS, routing) and QoS mechanisms for voice (managing latency, jitter, packet loss).
• VoIP Systems Expertise: Strong experience with Session Border Controllers (configuration and optimization) and media servers. Familiarity with VoIP security (TLS encryption, SRTP) and fraud prevention techniques. Hands-on development or configuration experience with open- source telephony stacks like FreeSWITCH, Kamailio/OpenSIPS, RTP proxies, and WebRTC gateways.
• NAT Traversal & WebRTC: In-depth knowledge of NAT traversal techniques (ICE/STUN/TURN) for media and signaling, and experience implementing WebRTC-based communication solutions. Ability to troubleshoot issues across firewalls and ensure reliable call setup in diverse network conditions.
• Programming & Debugging Skills: Proficiency in systems or network programming (e.g. C/C++for high-performance VoIP modules) and scripting (Python, Bash, or Go) for automation. Strong debugging skills using tools like Wireshark, SIP trace, and other network monitoring utilities.
• Distributed Systems & Cloud: Experience deploying or operating services in cloud environments with knowledge of containerization/Kubernetes is preferred. Understanding of distributed system design and resilience (clustering, georedundancy, fault tolerance) in a telecom context.
• Leadership & Communication: Excellent problem-solving abilities and a leadership mindset in driving complex projects. Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate across teams and to articulate architecture decisions to stakeholders.
