Job Description

The Optometrist will be responsible for conducting comprehensive eye examinations, assisting consultants, performing diagnostic tests, and ensuring accurate assessment of patients visual health. Key Responsibilities

A. Clinical Duties

  • Conduct complete eye examinations including refraction, vision testing, slit-lamp examination, and tonometry.
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as:
    • Visual acuity
    • Color vision
    • Amsler grid
    • Keratometry
    • Fields testing
    • Fundus imaging
  • Assist ophthalmologist during OPD procedures.
  • Detect and refer cases requiring medical/surgical interventions.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative counselling for cataract, LASIK, and other surgeries.
  • Guide the patient for appropriate spectacles, lenses, and low-vision aids.
  • Maintain infection control and biomedical waste disposal as per NABH/BMW rules.

B. Patient Care & Communication

  • Take detailed patient history and maintain accurate clinical documentation.
  • Educate patients regarding eye care, preventive measures, and treatment plans.
  • Handle patient flow efficiently to minimize waiting time.
  • Ensure patient privacy, dignity, and safety at all times.

C. Administrative & Quality Responsibilities

  • Maintain daily OPD logs, investigation reports, and patient records.
  • Ensure calibration and cleanliness of all diagnostic equipment.
  • Participate in NABH audits, quality improvement activities, and training programs.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital SOPs, safety protocols, and reporting formats.

3. Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of refraction and diagnostic procedures.
  • Good communication and patient-handling skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced hospital environment.
  • Familiarity with NABH documentation (preferred).
  • Technical proficiency with ophthalmic equipment.

4. Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Optometry / Diploma in Optometry.
  • Minimum

    2+ years of experience in a hospital or eye-care institution

    .
  • Additional certifications in contact lens fitting, low vision, or diagnostics (preferred).

5. Work Hours & Environment

  • OPD timings as per hospital schedule.
  • May require rotational shifts depending on hospital policy.
  • Occasional assistance during eye camps or community health programs.
