Job Description

Job Title: Livestock Manager

The Livestock Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of animal husbandry, health management, breeding, feeding programs, and livestock facilities. The role ensures optimal productivity, animal welfare, and efficient farm operations while supervising livestock staff and implementing best practices in animal management.

Key Responsibilities

1. Animal Husbandry & Welfare

  • Monitor daily health and behavior of all livestock.
  • Ensure proper feeding, watering, housing, and overall welfare.
  • Maintain herd records including birth, mortality, weight, and health data.
  • Apply and monitor biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.

2. Health Management

  • Coordinate routine vaccinations, deworming, and veterinary treatments.
  • Work closely with veterinarians for diagnosis, emergencies, and herd health plans.
  • Identify signs of illness, lameness, or stress and take corrective action promptly.

3. Breeding & Reproduction

  • Develop and implement breeding programs (natural service or AI).
  • Track breeding cycles, pregnancy checks, calving/lambing/farrowing/kidding schedules.
  • Manage newborn care and ensure high survival rates.

4. Feeding & Nutrition

  • Create and monitor feeding programs based on species and production stage.
  • Manage feed inventory, ration formulation, and feeding schedules.
  • Ensure feed quality, storage, and cleanliness of feeding equipment.

5. Staff Management

  • Supervise livestock caretakers, workers, and herdsmen.
  • Train staff on animal handling, health protocols, safety, and daily tasks.
  • Allocate duties and monitor performance to maintain high standards.

6. Facility & Equipment Management

  • Oversee maintenance of barns, pens, milking parlors, shelters, water systems, and fencing.
  • Ensure proper operation and cleanliness of livestock equipment (feeders, waterers, etc.).
  • Implement safety procedures for equipment use and handling animals.

7. Record Keeping & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate documentation of health treatments, breeding data, feed usage, and production.
  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards, environmental regulations, and farm policies.
  • Prepare reports on herd status, productivity, and performance metrics.

8. Production Planning & Improvement

  • Analyze productivity trends and recommend improvements.
  • Reduce mortality and enhance growth, milk yield, or meat production.
  • Implement modern livestock management techniques and technologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Livestock Production, Veterinary Technology, or related field (preferred).
  • 3+ years experience in livestock management or farm animal operations.
