Job Overview Live Underwriter: -

A Live Underwriter in U.S. mortgages evaluates loan applications, assesses borrower risk, and ensures compliance with lending guidelines (FHA, VA, Conventional, etc.). They review income, credit, assets, and property details to approve, suspend, or deny loans while working with loan officers and processors.

Key Responsibilities:

Loan Evaluation & Decision-Making

• Review and analyze

  mortgage loan applications

  for

  eligibility, accuracy, completeness, and compliance

  with internal and regulatory guidelines.
• Assess

  borrower creditworthiness

  by thoroughly reviewing

  credit history, income, assets, and collateral

  (4Cs of Underwriting).
• Ensure loan documentation adheres to

  HUD, investor, and company guidelines

  to mitigate risk.
• Make

  independent underwriting decisions

  on loan approvals, suspensions, or denials based on risk assessment.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Ensure compliance with

  federal, state, and company lending regulations

  to minimize potential risks.
• Maintain thorough documentation of underwriting decisions for

  audit purposes

• Identify and report

  potential fraud or red flags

  to management and compliance teams.

Process Optimization & Collaboration

• Work closely with

  loan processors, advisors, and management

  to resolve escalations and streamline the underwriting process.
• Provide guidance to internal teams on

  best underwriting practices

  and regulatory changes.

• Manage loans efficiently

  using Encompass and other underwriting tools.

Quality Assurance & Customer Service

• Ensure timely completion

  of underwriting reviews while maintaining high-quality standards.
• Communicate underwriting decisions

  clearly and professionally

  with stakeholders.
• Continuously seek

  opportunities for process improvements

  to enhance efficiency.

Qualifications & Requirements:

bachelors degree or Equivalent Experience

5+ Years of End-to-End Mortgage Underwriting Experience

HUD, investor, and regulatory guidelines

Encompass & other mortgage underwriting systems

analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

fast-paced, high-volume environment

Excellent communication & stakeholder management skills
