Indesign Automation Developer

Role & responsibilities

• Structuring Content.
• Create product and authoring templates.
• Create programs/scripts to automate the flow of content into templates.
• Design, develop, and maintain automation scripts and tools for Adobe InDesign workflows, using ExtendScript, Adobe UXP, and other relevant technologies.
• Automate production processes such as: o Creation of InDesign (INDD) files o Batch image manipulation and optimization o Generation of HTML, JSON and XML outputs o Integration of editorial content with XML and structured data formats.
• Collaborate with editorial, design, and production teams to understand workflow pain points and opportunities for automation.
• Implement solutions for structured content workflows, including DITA XML or other content management frameworks.
• Develop and support tools that facilitate seamless exchange of data between InDesign, XML, and other content systems.
• Ensure that automated solutions integrate smoothly into existing production pipelines and tools. Provide technical documentation, training, and ongoing support for automation tools.
• Stay up-to-date with new Adobe technologies (e.g., UXP, ExtendScript updates) and industry trends related to automation.
• Assist with exploratory projects involving Node.js, Python, and other programming tools for broader workflow solutions.

Job Requirements/Skills and Experience:

• Expert in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe InDesign.
• Expert knowledge of ExtendScript for Adobe InDesign automation.
• Strong proficiency in XML, including the ability to work with structured and semi-structured XML data.
• Familiarity with DITA XML or other structured authoring frameworks a plus.
• Familiarity with CMI5, QTI, SCORM and other learning content delivery formats a plus.
• Experience developing scripts and tools that automate editorial and production processes.
• Problem solving mindset with the ability to translate production needs into robust automation.
