Job Description

Job Purpose:

To manage and supervise the furnace operations during the assigned shift to ensure smooth and safe steel melting processes, timely production, and adherence to quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shift Operations:
  • Monitor furnace operations (e.g., Electric Arc Furnace, Induction Furnace) throughout the shift.
  • Ensure melting schedules and heat cycles are followed as per production plan.
  • Coordinate with production planning, quality, and maintenance departments.
  • Manpower Management:
  • Supervise furnace operators, helpers, and maintenance support staff.
  • Allocate tasks and manage shift manpower efficiently.
  • Conduct pre-shift and post-shift briefings.
  • Process Control & Quality:
  • Maintain target temperature, tapping time, and alloy composition.
  • Check raw material charging (scrap, sponge iron, ferro alloys).
  • Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Safety & Compliance:
  • Enforce safety protocols and PPE usage at the furnace area.
  • Take immediate action during emergency situations (spillage, overheat, equipment malfunction).
  • Conduct shift-wise safety checks and report unsafe conditions.
  • Maintenance Coordination:
  • Report and coordinate breakdowns or preventive maintenance needs.
  • Maintain logbooks for equipment status and operational issues.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
  • Maintain shift-wise production reports, energy consumption, and furnace performance records.
  • Handover shift summary to next shift and department heads.

Key Skills Required:

  • In-depth knowledge of steel melting furnace operations
  • Shift handling and team leadership
  • Exposure to safety practices in steel industry
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy and melting chemistry
  • Good communication and coordination skills

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgy / Mechanical / Electrical / Industrial Engineering
  • Furnace operation training or certification is a plus

Experience:

  • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in furnace operations in a steel plant
  • Experience in handling Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or Induction Furnace preferred

Work Conditions:

  • Rotational shifts (Day/Night)
  • Exposure to high temperature, noise, and dust
  • Strict PPE and safety adherence required
