Job Description

About the Organization

Basic Healthcare Services (BHS) is a not-for-profit organization working to ensure that marginalized and vulnerable communities can lead healthy lives with dignity. Through a network of AMRIT Clinics—our primary healthcare centers—we provide high-quality and low-cost healthcare to rural and tribal communities in southern Rajasthan. Today, six clinics serve nearly 100,000 people, of whom about 90% are tribal. We also operate day-care centers (Phulwaris) to provide care and nutrition to young children. Alongside service delivery, BHS is also a leading voice on primary healthcare in India and undertakes implementation research to strengthen public health systems.

At BHS, young professionals are an integral part of our mission. Whether in the field, at clinics, or in the communities we serve, they work closely with public health practitioners, doctors, researchers, and grassroots workers. BHS provides mentorship, space for experimentation, and encouragement to bring fresh ideas into practice.

Working at BHS—What It Means for Young Professionals

As a Communications Fellow, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working in the realm of primary healthcare for vulnerable communities living in remote, rural regions. This fellowship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health communications while contributing meaningfully. You will learn how to tell powerful stories of impact, amplify the voices of rural communities, and experiment with creative ways of engaging diverse audiences. You’ll also work closely with mentors, interact with diverse stakeholders, and leave with both practical skills and a deeper understanding of the development sector.

This role is ideal for someone curious about the intersections of public health, storytelling, and social change—and looking for a short-term role (6–12 months) to learn, grow, and make a difference.

What you'll do

  • Manage and grow the organisation’s social media handle with engaging and consistent content
  • Work closely with program teams in designing and producing Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, infographics, short videos, and other creative content on public health themes.
  • Document case studies, field stories, and impact narratives from our programs.
  • Coordinate and produce the organization’s quarterly newsletter, including writing, editing, and layout.
  • Learn how to design and implement a communications strategy for a nonprofit organization.

Who Should Apply?

  • Recent graduates/ postgraduates in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Health, Development Studies, or related fields.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (English and Hindi).
  • An eye for storytelling—able to translate complex ideas into simple, engaging content.
  • Basic graphic design skills (Canva, Adobe, or similar tools) preferred.
  • Curiosity about public health, rural development, or the development sector.
