Design Manager Road Signage Manufacturing

Overview

The Design Manager oversees the entire design function for road signage systems, ensuring accurate, compliant, and cost-effective designs. This role manages the design team, coordinates with production and project departments, and ensures all drawings and technical documents meet industry standards and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor designers, draftsmen, and design engineers.
  • Allocate design tasks and monitor progress to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure technical accuracy of drawings and calculations.
  • Develop and implement design standards, templates, and best practices.

2. Project & Client Coordination

  • Coordinate with clients, consultants, and project teams to gather design requirements.
  • Interpret specifications, road authority guidelines, and project documentation.
  • Prepare and review technical submittals, shop drawings, as-built drawings, and method statements.
  • Attend project meetings to clarify design intent and resolve technical queries.

3. Engineering & Technical Oversight

  • Oversee design and detailing of:
    • Road sign boards (regulatory, warning, directional, VMS)
    • Poles, cantilevers, gantries, and structural supports
    • Foundations and mounting assemblies
  • Ensure design compliance with standards such as AASHTO, EN 12899, BS/EN standards, ASTM, and local authority guidelines.
  • Work closely with structural engineers to verify load calculations and structural integrity.

4. Production & Fabrication Support

  • Coordinate closely with fabrication, welding, and production teams.
  • Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and cost-efficient.
  • Resolve fabrication issues, suggest design modifications, and support continuous improvement.
  • Validate material selections, surface treatment details, and BOMs.

5. Quality, Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure all drawings and designs meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain revision control, documentation standards, and drawing libraries.
  • Implement quality checks and internal audits for design output.
  • Introduce new technologies, tools, and design software to improve workflow.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, or Industrial Engineering.
  • 5–12 years of experience in design, preferably in signage, steel fabrication, or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of road signage standards, structural steel design, and fabrication processes.
  • Expertise in design tools: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Tekla, or similar.
  • Good understanding of structural analysis tools and fundamentals.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
