Database Engineer ( PostgreSQL, AWS RDS )

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze and optimize SQL queries, indexes, and schema designs to improve application performance.
• Work closely with developers to embed database best practices into the software development lifecycle.
• Conduct performance benchmarking and tuning on PostgreSQL (both self-hosted and on AWS RDS). Recommend and implement strategies for data partitioning, connection pooling, and caching.
• Help design and evolve data models for scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with SREs/DevOps to optimize RDS configurations and automate maintenance activities. Participate in architectural reviews to ensure database-related concerns are addressed early.
• Monitor and profile query performance using PostgreSQL EXPLAIN plans, pg_stat_statements, CloudWatch, and other tools.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• 8 to 12 years of experience working with relational databases, with a strong focus on PostgreSQL. Deep knowledge of AWS RDS for PostgreSQL, including tuning parameters, failover, backups, and scaling.
• Strong understanding of database internals, indexing strategies, query optimization, and ACID principles.
• Hands-on experience in database performance tuning at the application level.
• Ability to analyze slow queries and provide actionable optimization strategies. Familiarity with tools like pgAdmin, pgbouncer, pg_stat_statements, AWS CloudWatch, etc.
• Solid understanding of data modeling and normalization principles. Comfortable working in Agile product development environments.

Preferred Skills

• Exposure to microservices architectures & and how data access patterns evolve in such setups.
• Experience working with ORMs (like SQLAlchemy, Hibernate, etc.) and mitigating performance issues stemming from them.
• Basic scripting skills (Python, Bash, etc.) for automation and tooling. Familiarity with other AWS services like Lambda, S3, CloudFormation, and CloudWatch Logs.
