Job Designation

Data Scientist (Data Migration & Cleansing)

Location Preference

India (Kozhikode, Mysore)

Relevant Experience

8+ Years

Role Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to join our India team and lead critical data initiatives for a major U.S. client in the insurance sector. This midtosenior level role (8+ years of experience) is fully remote and requires working overlapping US West Coast hours. The ideal candidate is not only technically proficient in data migration and data quality, but also proactive and customerfocused, willing to go the extra mile to deliver value. You will play a key role in data migration, data cleansing, and database projects, ensuring high data integrity and client satisfaction. Strong English communication skills and confidence in engaging with USbased stakeholders are a must, as youll frequently collaborate with clients and crossfunctional teams. This position offers the opportunity to grow and lead our data services team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Migration Leadership:

Plan and execute endtoend data migration projects for the client, moving data from legacy systems to modern platforms. This includes mapping sourcetotarget data, developing and maintaining ETL pipelines, and overseeing the extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of data with minimal downtime. Conduct thorough premigration analysis of legacy data structures and strategize how to morph them into the new system’s format without issues.
  • Data Cleansing & Quality:

Take ownership of data cleansing efforts before and after migration to guarantee high data quality. Identify and fix data that is incomplete, inconsistent, duplicated, or erroneous prior to migration. Parse and correct data, standardize formats, deduplicate records, and consolidate data to eliminate redundancies. Postmigration, validate and audit the migrated data to ensure accuracy and integrity in the target system.
  • Database Management:

Support database initiatives such as setting up new databases or data warehouses, optimizing data storage, and implementing data governance best practices. Leverage strong SQL skills to create or modify database objects and write complex queries for data validation and reporting. Improve database performance and assist in data modeling or schema design as needed to support new business requirements.
  • Client Engagement:

Serve as a clientfacing data expert, working closely with stakeholders to understand their data needs and pain points. Communicate technical concepts and migration plans in clear, nontechnical language that business users can understand. Provide regular status updates, articulate any data issues or risks, and confidently answer client questions. Build trust by being responsive and demonstrating a deep understanding of the client’s business domain (life insurance/financial services).
  • Proactive Value Addition:

Go beyond just “doing the task”, anticipate potential data problems and opportunities to add value. Identify data needs or quality issues before they surface, suggest improvements, and leverage data for the client’s benefit. Discover trends or anomalies during data cleansing and proactively inform the client of insights that could help their business. Continually look for ways to streamline processes or implement best practices that will exceed client expectations.
  • Team Collaboration:

Demonstrate a strong work ethic and selfmanagement in a remote setting. Align your workday with U.S. Pacific Time business hours and collaborate effectively with both the India team and U.S. team members via online meetings and communication tools. Uphold professionalism and reliability; the client and team can count on you to deliver results without close supervision.
  • Documentation & Reporting:

Create clear technical documentation for all data migration and cleansing processes (e.g. mapping documents, transformation rules, data dictionaries). Prepare concise reports or dashboards to communicate data quality metrics or migration progress to stakeholders. Strong written communication is important for capturing project learnings and ensuring knowledge transfer within the team.
  • Team Leadership:

In addition to handson work, be ready to mentor junior data specialists as the team grows. Help with hiring and training new team members in India over time. Lay the groundwork for best practices and standard operating procedures, so that you can smoothly transition into a lead or manager role, supervising a team to scale our data services for the client.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience:

8+ years of professional experience in data science, data engineering, or related datafocused roles. Must have substantial experience leading or playing a key role in data migration projects, including handson work with large datasets and complex data mappings. Experience in data analysis and data quality improvement initiatives is essential.
  • Programming & Data Tools:

Proficiency in Python (or a similar programming language) for data processing and scripting. Strong SQL skills for querying and manipulating data in databases (ability to write optimized queries, stored procedures, etc.). Experience with data migration or ETL tools (e.g. Informatica, Talend, Microsoft SSIS) is a strong plus.
  • Data Migration & ETL:

Deep understanding of ETL processes and data migration best practices. Ability to design and automate data pipelines to extract, transform, and load data between systems. Familiarity with handling various data formats and sources (databases, CSV, JSON, APIs, etc.).
  • Databases:

Solid experience with relational database management systems (such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL). Comfortable designing database schemas or data models and knowledgeable about indexing, keys, and performance tuning. Exposure to cloud databases or data warehouse platforms (AWS – e.g. Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery) is a plus.
  • Data Quality & Cleansing:

Demonstrated ability to clean and prepare data for use. Handson experience identifying data anomalies and using techniques to correct or remove bad data. Adept at finding duplicates and inconsistencies and resolving them so that the dataset is reliable. Knowledge of data profiling tools or writing custom scripts to validate data integrity is expected.
  • Analytics & Reporting:

While the core of this role is data migration, a strong analytical mindset is required. Comfortable with analyzing datasets to derive insights and verify outcomes. Experience creating reports or data visualizations to communicate findings. Experience with PowerBI for interactive reporting and data visualisation will be highly advantageous.
  • Communication:

Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written) are mandatory. You must be able to clearly explain technical concepts to nontechnical stakeholders and viceversa. Being articulate and confident in client conversations is critical – you should be able to lead meetings, present results, and handle questions or concerns with professionalism.
  • ClientFacing Aptitude:

Prior experience in a clientfacing role or a strong desire to work closely with clients. This includes being responsive, understanding client requirements, and building rapport. You should be unafraid to ask questions, clarify needs, and push back when necessary to ensure the client gets the best solution.
  • Proactive ProblemSolving:

A track record of taking initiative in past projects. We value team members who don’t just wait for instructions but actively seek out ways to improve processes or preempt issues. You should be the type of person who naturally looks for opportunities to optimize and add value, embodying a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Work Ethic & Accountability:

High level of integrity and commitment to delivering a full day’s work in a remote environment. You manage your time well, meet deadlines consistently, and can be trusted to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptability and Learning:

Ability to quickly learn new tools or concepts as needed. The data landscape and client needs can evolve, so being able to adapt whether it’s learning a new data platform or handling changes in project scope is important. A continuous learning attitude will help you excel in this role.
  • Teamwork and Leadership:

Strong collaboration skills to work with colleagues across different locations and time zones. Must be a team player who shares knowledge and helps others. Experience mentoring juniors or leading small teams is a plus.

Preferred/Bonus Qualifications

  • Domain Knowledge:

Experience in the insurance or financial services industry, especially with data related to insurance policies, underwriting, claims, or customer data, will be an advantage. Understanding the business context can help in making more insightful suggestions to the client.
  • Cloud & Big Data:

Familiarity with cloud ecosystems (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and their data services (like AWS Data Migration Service, Azure Data Factory, etc.). Any experience migrating data to cloud data warehouses or using big data tools (Hadoop, Spark) is a plus.
  • Certifications:

Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer, AWS Certified Data Analytics, or other data science or big data certifications can be a plus.
  • Advanced Analytics:

Knowledge of advanced analytics or machine learning could allow you to uncover deeper insights in the data. Any experience with statistical analysis or predictive modeling (e.g. using Python/R, building dashboards) that can add value to data migration or cleansing projects is nice to have.
  • Project Management:

Experience acting as a project lead or coordinator for data projects. Ability to create project plans, track progress, and ensure deliverables in a structured way (possibly using Agile methodologies or tools like JIRA).
  • US/International Collaboration:

Prior work experience with USbased clients or onshoreoffshore model projects. Understanding of Western business culture and work practices can help in smoother communication and meeting client expectations. Cultural awareness and flexibility in work hours to accommodate time differences will be appreciated.

What We Offer

  • Impactful Work:

Opportunity to work on a highimpact data modernization initiative for a leading U.S. life insurance company. Your contributions will directly influence the success of the client’s strategic projects (data migration to modern systems, data quality improvements), giving you a chance to showcase your skills on a large stage.
  • Growth and Leadership:

This role is designed to grow into a leadership position. You’ll start by owning key projects yourself, but as we expand our footprint, you will help build and lead a local team of data professionals. We offer mentorship and support to develop your leadership skills, so you can advance your career into management while still honing technical expertise.
  • Competitive Compensation:

We offer a competitive salary package commensurate with your experience and skill set. Additional benefits may include health insurance, performance bonuses, paid time off, and other standard benefits as applicable. We recognize and reward extra effort and innovative ideas that drive customer success.
  • Professional Development:

You’ll have access to resources for continuous learning – whether it’s attending online courses, obtaining certifications, or participating in industry conferences (as applicable). We encourage our data scientists to stay updated with the latest trends and tools. You will be joining a talented global team where knowledge sharing is common, and you can learn from experts in other areas (cloud, analytics, etc.).

Note: This role will require flexibility in work hours to ensure overlap with U.S. teams (typically Pacific Time working hours). Occasional late evening or early morning meetings may be needed. We appreciate your understanding and commitment to meeting our client’s timezone needs.
