The Role


What You'll Do:

  • Design & Development:

    Lead the design and development of topology optimization algorithms specifically for reinforced concrete (RCC) elements.
  • Research & Modelling:

    Apply a deep understanding of computational continuum mechanics to create multi-material models for reinforced concrete. A core part of this will involve representing concrete's compressive behaviour with continuum elements and steel's tensile forces with truss elements.  
  • Algorithm Development:

    Develop custom optimisation algorithms in Python, with a focus on methods like SIMP (Solid Isotropic Material with Penalisation) and gradient-based solvers like MMA (Method of Moving Asymptotes) to produce structurally sound and efficient designs.  
  • Structural & Constructability Analysis:

    Integrate structural and manufacturing constraints directly into your algorithms to ensure the optimised designs are not only efficient but also buildable. You will leverage the principles of the Strut-and-Tie Method (STM) to generate practical reinforcement layouts that are consistent with design codes and can be verified by engineers.  
  • Visualisation & Prototyping:

    Use parametric tools like Grasshopper and Rhino for dynamic modelling and visualisation, creating a seamless workflow from algorithm to a tangible design artefact. You will also be responsible for hands-on prototyping, testing, and iterating on your designs.
