. Pre-Procedure Responsibilities

  • Patient Assessment:
  • Review patient history, medications, allergies, and lab results.
  • Conduct baseline assessments (vital signs, ECG, physical status).
  • Preparation:
  • Explain procedure and obtain informed consent (or assist the physician in doing so).
  • Ensure all required documentation is complete.
  • Prepare and position the patient appropriately.
  • Start IV lines and administer pre-medications as ordered.
  • Equipment Setup:
  • Check and prepare cath lab equipment (monitors, defibrillators, contrast injectors, etc.).
  • Ensure sterility of the procedure area and supplies.

2. Intra-Procedure Responsibilities

  • Monitor Patient Status:
  • Continuously observe and record vital signs, ECG changes, oxygen levels.
  • Identify and report complications (e.g., arrhythmias, bleeding, allergic reactions).
  • Assist the Interventional Team:
  • Provide instruments and support to the cardiologist or interventional radiologist.
  • Administer medications under physician direction (e.g., sedatives, anticoagulants).
  • Document the procedure in real time (time-outs, contrast used, medications, events).
  • Emergency Preparedness:
  • Be ready to assist during code blue (CPR, defibrillation).
  • Set up and assist with emergent procedures like temporary pacemaker insertion or intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP).

3. Post-Procedure Responsibilities

  • Recovery and Monitoring:
  • Monitor for bleeding, hematoma, or signs of complications at the catheter site.
  • Check vital signs and neurological status frequently.
  • Manage sheaths and assist in removal when appropriate.
  • Patient Education:
  • Provide discharge instructions (activity restrictions, medication guidance, follow-up care).
  • Educate on signs of complications (e.g., chest pain, leg numbness, excessive bleeding).
  • Documentation:
  • Complete and update nursing records.
  • Ensure proper handoff to recovery/ward staff.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain continued education and stay up to date with ACLS/BLS certification.
  • Ensure inventory control and reporting of equipment/supply needs.
  • Adhere to infection control and radiation safety protocols.
