Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

1.Breeding Program Management

  • Lead the design and execution of maize breeding strategies, focusing on yield potential, adaptability, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, and quality traits.
  • Develop and manage breeding pipelines for both short-term and long-term product development goals.
  • Maintain and enhance germplasm diversity, integrating elite local and global genetic resources.

2. Hybrid & Inbred Line Development

  • Plan and execute hybridization, selfing, and selection activities to develop elite inbred lines.
  • Conduct multi-location testing and evaluation of hybrids for agronomic performance and stability.
  • Select and advance promising hybrids for pre-commercial and commercial release.

3. Data Analysis & Decision Making

  • Apply modern breeding tools, statistical analysis, and decision-support systems to select superior genotypes.
  • Utilize molecular breeding, genomic selection, and marker-assisted selection where applicable.
  • Manage breeding data through digital tools and breeding management software.

4. Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with product development, seed production, quality assurance, and marketing teams to ensure breeding outputs meet market requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal/external partners of biotechnology teams to integrate trait introgression into breeding pipelines.
  • Engage with external research institutes, universities, and global germplasm networks for accessing germplasm, facilities/capabilities and joint projects/initiatives.

5. Field Research & Trial Management

  • Design and supervise field experiments for various pipeline stages across diverse environments.
  • Support and ensure accuracy in data recording, trial management, and phenotypic evaluations.
  • Oversee off-season nurseries and managed stress environments for targeted trait selection.

6. Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and train junior breeders, research associates, and field technicians.
  • Allocate resources effectively by prioritizing short-medium-long term breeding objectives.

Foster a culture of innovation, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Ph.D. in Plant Breeding/Genetics/Agronomy
  • 10-15 years of breeding experience in a seed company, minimum 5-7 Years of experience in Maize breeding.
  • Knowledge of Agronomy of major crops.
  • Good relationships with organizers.
  • Ability to create a team , coach them , guide them
