Job Summary

We are seeking an accomplished Assistant Manager Substation Design & Engineering with proven expertise in AIS and GIS substations up to 220 kV voltage level. The ideal candidate will lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for the complete design, engineering, and interconnection of high-voltage substations for renewable and conventional power evacuation, grid strengthening, and industrial applications. The role requires a strong technical foundation, leadership in cross-functional coordination, and accountability across the full project lifecyclefrom concept and tendering through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end design and engineering for AIS/GIS substations up to 220 kV, including grid-connected and pool-based substations for solar, wind, and hybrid projects.
  • Manage a team of electrical and civil design engineers to deliver integrated substation engineering packages.
  • Approve SLDs, layout drawings, equipment specifications, and GA drawings for switchyard and control room infrastructure.
  • Conduct and review power system studies such as load flow, short circuit, insulation coordination, earthing and lightning protection design.
  • Review protection philosophy, relay coordination studies, CT/PT sizing, and control & protection logic diagrams.
  • Guide civil/structural design of switchyard foundations, control rooms, and cable trenches in line with seismic, soil, and load conditions.
  • Interface with OEMs for procurement and integration of HV equipment such as circuit breakers, isolators, CTs, VTs, LA, busbars, and switchgear.
  • Ensure technical compliance with CEA, CERC, STU, DISCOM, CEIG regulations, and international codes (IS, IEC, IEEE, UL, NFPA).
  • Support technical design inputs during pre-bid and EPC proposal stages including BOQ, layouts, and design briefs.
  • Supervise detailed design documentation for submission to clients, consultants, and statutory bodies.
  • Coordinate with SLDC/STU/CEIG for interconnection compliance, approvals, and energization procedures.
  • Ensure compatibility and integration of protection, SCADA, and remote operation systems with client networks.
  • Oversee FAT, SAT, and QA/QC compliance during design and implementation stages.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of system issues and recommend corrective/preventive actions.
  • Maintain and enforce internal engineering standards, templates, and best practices documentation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and enable continuous skill development within the team.
  • Analyze system performance, conduct root cause analysis for failures, and support predictive maintenance.
  • Prepare technical reports, test plans, compliance checklists, and risk assessments (DFMEA).
  • Participate in safety reviews, technical case studies, and client discussions.
  • Support technical inputs for RfPs, DPRs, feasibility reports, and lender due diligence.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5–12 years of hands-on experience in high-voltage substation design and grid interfacing (11kV to 220 kV).
  • Experience delivering substations for transmission utilities, IPPs, renewable energy developers, or large industrial clients.
  • Proficient in design software/tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, CYME, Dig SILENT, PSCAD, and Excel-based sizing calculators.
  • Deep understanding of HV equipment ratings, layouts, statutory approvals, and utility coordination.
  • Familiarity with SCADA, RTU, communication protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus), and substation automation systems.
  • Experience working with utilities like PGCIL, GETCO, TANGEDCO, or in renewable energy evacuation is desirable.
  • Experience managing design teams of 4–15 engineers and coordinating with external consultants and clients.
