Assistant Legal Counsel

As Assistant Legal Counsel at Wave, you will play a crucial role in supporting Wave's operations in The Gambia. You will work closely with the Senior Legal Counsel (Anglophone Africa) to ensure robust contracting, risk management, and regulatory compliance. Your responsibilities will include managing contracting processes, legal operations, litigation & dispute resolution, people support, company secretarial tasks, risk management, data privacy & consumer protection, and regulatory support. Additionally, you will manage relationships with external law firms and contribute to cross-jurisdictional legal projects as needed. **Key Responsibilities:** - Manage and enhance contracting processes, including policy implementation, contract management software, e-signature tools, and archiving. - Implement group legal policies and suggest improvements based on legal developments and industry best practices. - Oversee claims and disputes, including case management, mediation, arbitration, and litigation. - Provide legal support on employment contracts, disciplinaries, and terminations. - Organize board meetings and handle secretarial matters for the Gambian entity. - Collaborate with the Risk & Controls teams to implement mitigations for legal risks. - Assist in the implementation of the data privacy compliance strategy. - Offer advice on licensing and regulatory matters in coordination with the wider legal team. **Qualifications Required:** - Bachelor's degree in Law from a reputable institution. - Qualified lawyer in an Anglophone African or Commonwealth jurisdiction. - 5+ years of in-house experience in technology, finance, fintech, or mobile money, preferably with a leading regional or global organization. - Fluency in French is a significant advantage.
