Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Hull Form & Structural Design

  • Develop structural design and hull form concepts for various ship types (commercial, naval, offshore etc.).
  • Create detailed structural models, general arrangement drawings, and hull section plans.
  • Prepare midship sections, structural modules, block designs, and workshop drawings.

2. Calculations & Analysis

  • Perform structural strength calculations, scantling verification, and weight estimation.
  • Conduct stability, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, and load distribution analysis.
  • Support FEM and other advanced simulations to validate design integrity and compliance.

3. Production Engineering Support

  • Generate fabrication drawings, nesting details, and structural assembly plans.
  • Work with production teams to ensure manufacturability and efficiency of structural design.
  • Provide on-site/yard support to resolve technical queries during hull block fabrication, erection & alignment.

4. Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure design compliance with classification rules (ABS, IRS, DNV, LR, BV etc.) and IMO regulations.
  • Prepare and submit technical documentation to class societies for review and approval.
  • Review class/owner comments and incorporate necessary design updates.

5. Interdepartmental Coordination

  • Collaborate with piping, machinery, electrical, accommodation, HVAC, and outfitting teams to ensure structural integration.
  • Coordinate with procurement, material planning, and yard production teams on material specifications and schedules.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and customer discussions.

6. Optimization & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify design improvements to enhance vessel strength, hull efficiency, stability, performance & fuel economy.
  • Support initiatives for cost reduction, weight reduction, and structural reliability enhancements.
  • Use engineering feedback from previous vessel builds to improve future design quality.

7. Quality & Safety Focus

  • Conduct design safety reviews and risk assessments for hull structures.
  • Ensure adherence to engineering standards, shipyard processes, and quality systems.
  • Support testing, trials, inspections, and surveys during hull construction stages.

8. Software & Tools

  • 3D modeling & structural design software: Tribon, NUPAS-CADMATIC, AVEVA Marine, ShipConstructor, Rhino, Siemens NX.
  • CAD drafting tools: AutoCAD, SolidWorks.
  • Analysis tools: FEM software, GHS, Maxsurf, ANSYS etc.
