Job Title: Academic Counselor

Department: Student Services / Academic Affairs
Reports To: Director of Academic Advising / Dean of Students
Position Type: Full-Time

Job Summary:

The Academic Counselor provides academic advising and support services to students to promote student success, retention, and timely graduation. This role involves helping students understand degree requirements, select appropriate courses, overcome academic challenges, and develop educational and career plans. The counselor collaborates with faculty, staff, and other campus resources to support students in achieving their academic and personal goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise students on academic programs, degree requirements, course selection, and academic policies and procedures.
  • Monitor student progress toward degree completion; provide early alerts and interventions for students at risk.
  • Assist students with registration, add/drop processes, transfer credits, and academic petitions.
  • Develop individualized academic plans for students based on their goals, interests, and abilities.
  • Provide counseling on study skills, time management, goal setting, and other academic success strategies.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources such as tutoring, mental health services, career counseling, and financial aid.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and academic progress using advising systems or software.
  • Participate in orientation programs, academic workshops, retention initiatives, and outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to identify and address barriers to student success.
  • Stay current on institutional policies, academic programs, and best practices in academic advising.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education.
  • Master’s degree will preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student support services in a higher education setting preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of academic advising best practices.
  • Organizational and time-management skills.
  • Familiarity with student information systems and advising software (e.g., Banner, Degree Works, PeopleSoft).
  • Empathy, patience, and a student-centered approach.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹15,000.00 per month
