Role & responsibilities

Role Summary

The Thermal / Cooling System Engineer for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is responsible for designing, validating, and optimizing thermal management solutions for utility-scale and industrial battery systems. The role ensures safe operating temperature, uniform thermal distribution, high system efficiency, and compliance with global standards. Responsibilities include HVAC engineering, battery thermal modelling, airflow design, controls integration, and system-level cooling architecture .

Criteria:

• Design end-to-end thermal management architecture for containerized or modular BESS platforms.
• Define battery rack-level, module-level, and container-level cooling concepts (air cooling, liquid cooling, hybrid cooling).
• Conduct airflow simulations and CFD modelling to ensure optimal temperature uniformity across racks/modules.
• Define HVAC capacity sizing based on battery characteristics, ambient conditions, and system derating curves.
• Develop thermal models to predict battery temperature behaviour under various load and environmental conditions.
• Select and size HVAC units, heat exchangers, refrigerant circuits, blowers, ducts, and thermal sensors.
• Work with suppliers on A/C unit specifications, COP, derating, compressor type, refrigerant selection, and control logic.
• Design air ducting layouts, fresh-air/exhaust systems, and pressure balancing.
• Ensure compliance with relevant standards

Controls & Integration

• Work with controls/EMS teams to integrate HVAC with battery management system (BMS), module sensors, and container controllers.
• Define cooling control algorithms (PID-based, load-dependent cooling, standby mode).
• Set up alert thresholds and cooling redundancy strategies for different operating modes.

4. Thermal Safety & Compliance

• Support thermal runaway mitigation designsventing paths, gas exhaust systems, fire suppression interaction.
• Evaluate HVAC response during fault conditions (e.g., BMS alarms, high-temperature events).
• Assist in UL 9540A testing and analysis related to heating, venting, and cooling layouts.
• Ensure thermal design meets safety standards: UL 9540, UL 1973, NFPA 855, IEC 62933.
• Develop test plans for HVAC performance testing, container-level testing, environmental chamber tests.
• Validate cooling system performance under extreme weather, cycling profiles, and grid-support operations.
• Support commissioning teams in diagnosing thermal or airflow issues on-site.
• Investigate field failures (e.g., compressor failures, sensor drift, uneven temperature distribution) and drive design improvements.
• Drive cost-reduction initiatives: optimized components, standardized HVAC modules, reduced energy consumption.
• Evaluate vendor HVAC systems and qualify new suppliers.
• Contribute to product documentation such as thermal specifications, layout drawings, CFD reports, and maintenance guidelines.
• Improve PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and reduce parasitic thermal system losses.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or Mechatronics.

Experience

• 8+ years of experience in BESS, EV thermal systems, data centre HVAC, telecom shelters, UPS cooling, or industrial cooling.

• Experience with thermal runaway safety designs is a strong advantage.

• Field or commissioning experience preferred
