Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Safety Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement the companys HSE strategy, policies, and objectives.
  • Lead safety programs to foster a proactive safety culture across the organization.
  • Guide and mentor the safety team and plant personnel in best practices.

2. Hazardous Chemical Safety Management

  • Ensure full compliance with chemical safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, REACH, GHS).
  • Oversee the safe storage, handling, usage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Maintain and update MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for all chemicals on site.
  • Conduct chemical hazard assessments and risk evaluations (e.g., HAZOP, HIRA).

3. Regulatory Compliance

  • Liaise with statutory authorities for environmental clearances, audits, inspections, and legal compliance.
  • Maintain compliance with national and international safety and environmental laws (e.g., Factories Act, ISO 45001, ISO 14001).

4. Risk Assessment & Incident Management

  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments across the plant.
  • Lead incident investigations (including root cause analysis) and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain records of near misses, accidents, and occupational health hazards.

5. Emergency Preparedness

  • Design and implement emergency response plans (ERP) for chemical spills, fires, explosions, etc.
  • Organize mock drills for fire safety, evacuation, chemical leaks, etc.

6. Training & Awareness

  • Plan and execute safety training programs for employees, contractors, and vendors.
  • Develop safety induction programs for new employees.
  • Promote behavioral safety and safety culture initiatives.

7. Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare safety reports, risk analysis, and compliance documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor KPIs related to safety performance and report regularly to leadership.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Environmental) or Science.
  • Diploma/Certification in Industrial Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, ADIS, PDIS).

Experience:

  • Minimum 12 years of experience in industrial safety, preferably in chemical, pharmaceutical, or hazardous materials manufacturing.
  • Proven experience in managing safety in hazardous chemical environments.

Key Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of chemical safety regulations and standards.
  • Leadership and team management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with HAZOP, HIRA, JSA, and other safety methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and training abilities.

Certifications (Desirable):

  • NEBOSH IGC / NEBOSH Process Safety
  • ISO 45001 Lead Auditor
  • Fire Safety and First Aid certifications

Work Environment:

  • Primarily based in manufacturing plant(s), with regular site visits.
  • High exposure to chemicals, requiring use of PPE and safety protocols.
  • May involve interaction with government regulators, auditors, and emergency services.
