Job Summary:
The Senior Engineer in the Locomotive Department is responsible for overseeing the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of locomotives to ensure operational efficiency, reliability, and safety. This role requires hands-on technical expertise in diesel and/or electric locomotives, strong analytical skills, and experience managing teams and engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise routine and preventive maintenance of locomotives (diesel/electric).
- Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults in locomotives.
- Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards (e.g., RDSO, AAR, UIC).
- Oversee locomotive overhauls and major repairs in workshops or depots.
- Monitor locomotive performance and implement improvements for energy efficiency, reliability, and life-cycle cost reduction.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, failures, and corrective actions using CMMS or ERP systems.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (electrical, control systems, supply chain, operations).
- Mentor and train junior engineers and technicians.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and technical evaluations.
- Implement and support digital initiatives (IoT sensors, predictive maintenance systems, telematics) for locomotive monitoring.
- Contribute to the procurement process by drafting technical specifications and evaluating vendor products.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics Engineering (Master's preferred).
- Minimum 4–8 years of experience in locomotive maintenance, operations, or manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of diesel and/or electric propulsion systems, braking systems, control electronics, and bogie systems.
- Familiarity with maintenance standards and diagnostic tools (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, LocoSim).
- Understanding of railway safety regulations and quality control standards.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience working with major locomotive OEMs (GE, Alstom, Siemens, etc.) or large railway networks (Indian Railways, Amtrak, DB, etc.).
- Exposure to Six Sigma, Lean Maintenance, or Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) practices.
- Good project management and leadership abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a high-pressure, field-based environment.
