Scrub Nurse

Job Summary
A Scrub Nurse, also known as a Perioperative Nurse or Operating Room (OR) Nurse, is a registered nurse who works closely with surgeons during surgical procedures. They are responsible for maintaining a sterile environment, preparing surgical instruments, and assisting the surgical team in real time. The role demands high attention to detail, strong communication, and quick decision-making skills.

Job Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Duties:

• Prepare the operating room with necessary equipment and sterile supplies.
• Check and set up surgical instruments, ensuring all are functional and sterile.
• Assist with patient positioning and skin preparation.
• Confirm patient identity, procedure, and consent forms (in conjunction with the surgical team).

Intra-Operative Duties:

• Maintain a sterile field and hand instruments to the surgeon as needed.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during the procedure.
• Monitor and manage surgical tools, sponges, and materials used.
• Handle specimens correctly for lab analysis.

Post-Operative Duties:

• Account for all instruments and supplies used during the procedure.
• Assist with wound dressing and transfer of patients to the recovery room.
• Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures and materials.
• Decontaminate and restock instruments and supplies.

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and sterile techniques.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Physical stamina to stand for long hours.

Experience:

• 1–2 years of experience in surgical or perioperative nursing is often preferred but not always required for entry-level positions.
• Certification in perioperative nursing is highly desirable (e.g., CNOR - Certified Nurse Operating Room).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
