Job Description

Role Overview

A SAW Welder (also known as a Sub Arc Operator) controls and operates submerged arc welding equipment to produce high-quality welds, primarily in heavy fabrication, structural steel, pressure vessels, pipes, and industrial equipment.

Key Responsibilities

· Setup & Operation

  • Set up automatic or semi-automatic SAW equipment based on job specifications and safety procedures.
  • Monitor the welding process continuously to ensure consistency in galvanic deposition and weld integrity.

· Blueprint & Specification Interpretation

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, and relevant process documentation to determine welding parameters.

· Material Preparation & Handling

  • Prepare metal surfaces by cutting, cleaning, and aligning components according to weld spec.
  • Install and secure workpieces in jigs or fixtures for accurate welding.

· Quality Inspection & Testing

  • Visually and mechanically inspect welds for defects, such as porosity or cracking, meeting acceptance criteria and process specs.
  • Record production metrics and report deviations to supervisors or engineers.

· Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform routine maintenance on welding machinery—adjust amperage, voltage, flux feed rates, and wire speeds to optimize performance.
  • Promptly address minor equipment issues to avoid workflow disruption.

· Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to established safety protocols—use protective gear (helmets, gloves, boots, etc.) and manage slag removal and smoke extraction safely.
  • Maintain work areas in compliance with regulatory standards.

· Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with weld inspectors, engineers, fitters, and other welders for project coordination and continuous improvement.

Skills & Qualifications

· Educational Background

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical diploma in welding or metal fabrication is preferred.

· Certifications

  • Certifications in submerged arc welding (SAW) or from recognized bodies such as AWS/CWI are highly valued.

· Technical Proficiency

  • Strong grasp of welding principles and metallurgy.
  • Capability to read, interpret, and apply blueprints, weld maps, and technical documents.
  • Hands-on experience with SAW machines—setting correct parameters and performing preventive maintenance.

· Attention to Detail

  • Acute visual and mechanical inspection skills to detect weld flaws.
  • Diligent documentation and adherence to specifications—ensuring accurate fixturing and dimensional control.

· Physical & Mental Demands

  • Physically capable—standing, bending, positioning heavy workpieces.
  • Comfortable working in high temperatures and industrial environments.
  • Sound mental agility for troubleshooting and ensuring safety compliance.

· Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Strong communication for reporting issues and understanding technical instructions.
