Role & responsibilities

Position Summary

The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment across all areas of the cement plant, including quarry operations, raw mill, kiln, cement mill, and packing plant. The role involves implementing safety programs, conducting inspections, training employees, and ensuring compliance with legal and company HSE standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Health, Safety & Environment Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and national HSE regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies, procedures, and guidelines specific to cement plant operations.
  • Maintain records of statutory inspections, permits, and safety documentation.

2. Risk Assessment & Hazard Control

  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Risk Assessments (RA), and develop safe work methodologies.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and practices in areas such as kiln, crusher, mining/quarry, material handling, and high-temperature operations.
  • Recommend corrective and preventive actions.

3. Safety Training & Awareness

  • Conduct safety induction for new employees and contractors.
  • Organize regular toolbox talks, emergency drills, and awareness programs (PPE usage, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, working at height).
  • Train workforce on accident prevention and emergency response procedures.

4. Inspection & Monitoring

  • Carry out daily site inspections across production and maintenance areas.
  • Monitor use of PPE, housekeeping standards, and compliance with safety procedures.
  • Inspect tools, lifting equipment, fire safety systems, and machinery guards.

5. Incident Investigation

  • Lead investigation of accidents, near-misses, and unsafe acts/conditions.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and track corrective actions.
  • Analyze trends and implement measures to reduce recurrence.

6. Emergency Preparedness

  • Ensure availability and functionality of fire extinguishers, hydrants, first aid kits, and emergency exits.
  • Develop and update Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Coordinate with local emergency services when required.

7. Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare daily/weekly/monthly safety reports.
  • Maintain records of inspections, audits, training, and incidents.
  • Assist management during internal and external HSE audits.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of cement plant operations and industrial safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with HSE standards such as OSHA, ISO 45001, NFPA, and local regulations.
  • Excellent communication and training skills.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure in high-risk industrial environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Safety Engineering, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Certificate in NEBOSH / IOSH / OSHA or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in an industrial or cement manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of fire safety, first aid, and emergency response is an advantage.
