Job Description

Job Title: Purchase Manager Heavy Engineering (Steel Procurement)

Department: Purchase / Supply Chain

Location: Ranipet

Reporting To: Head Supply Chain / Plant Head

Job Summary:

We are looking for an experienced Purchase Manager with strong expertise in steel procurement and heavy engineering components. The ideal candidate will be responsible for strategic sourcing, vendor management, cost optimization, and ensuring timely availability of materials to support production and project schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan, source, and procure raw materials (mainly structural steel, plates, sections, pipes, consumables) and engineering items for fabrication and heavy engineering operations.

Develop and maintain vendor base for steel mills, stockists, and fabrication sub-contractors.

Negotiate prices, delivery terms, and payment conditions to achieve best value for the organization.

Prepare and issue Purchase Orders (POs) as per company procedures.

Ensure timely material availability as per production and project requirements.

Monitor and track material consumption and inventory levels to avoid shortages or overstocking.

Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, delivery, and cost metrics.

Coordinate with Quality, Production, and Stores departments for smooth inward and inspection processes.

Handle imported material purchase, if applicable, including logistics and documentation.

Ensure compliance with statutory and company procurement policies.

Prepare and present periodic purchase cost analysis and savings reports to management.

Support new vendor development and cost reduction initiatives.

Key Skills & Competencies:

Strong knowledge of steel grades, specifications, and fabrication requirements.

Sound understanding of heavy engineering and fabrication industry procurement processes.

Excellent negotiation and vendor management skills.

Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP / Tally / Oracle) and MS Excel.

Strong analytical, planning, and communication skills.

Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Qualification & Experience:

Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Production Engineering or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum 8–12 years of experience in procurement of steel and engineering materials within a heavy fabrication / heavy engineering industry.

Preferred: Experience in large fabrication projects (pressure vessels, structures, equipment manufacturing, etc.).\
