Job Description

Background of The Hans Foundation
The Hans Foundation, established in 2009, is a Public Charitable Trust that that works for the improvement of quality of life for underprivileged communities across India through Health, Education, Livelihood and Disability sector interventions. THF undertakes direct implementation of projects on the ground in addition to providing funding support to not-for-profit organizations in India through its donor – RIST, USA. THF’s Strategic planning focuses on key areas of its work with the aim of addressing the key issues of poverty alleviation, economic inequalities, and 360° impact on the quality of life through social development programs. THF’s programs are majorly implemented in the most rural and under-developed areas in the country. Over the years, THF has expanded its charitable activities in collaboration with State and Central Governments, institutions, corporates, academia and non-government organizations for sustainable interventions to achieve scale and economy. The interventions implemented by the foundation range from grass root level to national level programs.

About project:
Disability is a multi-dimensional and complex concept and there is no universally accepted, uncontroversial definition of disability. Awareness about persons with disabilities is slowly increasing with respect to nomenclature and certain visible characteristics. However, the attitudes toward persons with disabilities (PwD) is still one of charity and sympathy. Very little awareness exists about the potential of PwD. There are more than 15 lakh schools in India. Less than 30% are inclusive. A study by the World Bank (2007) reported that Indian children with disability are five times more likely to be out of school than children belonging to scheduled castes or scheduled tribes (SC or ST). Moreover, when children with disability do attend school they rarely progress beyond the primary level. This leads to poor acquisition of educational and vocational skills which further paves the way for lower employment chances and ultimately ends in long-term income poverty.
Robust policies have been introduced from the time to time by different governments to support and sustain inclusive education of children with disabilities (CwD). However, education in mainstream schools remains elusive for most children with disabilities. Schools in National Capital Region have access to resources and trained personnel including qualified teachers and Special Educators. In spite of this, inclusion alludes many children with disabilities. Inclusive education systems wherein each individual has equal opportunity for educational progress is a top global priority. India has adopted a rights-based approach to inclusion of children with disabilities by ratifying the UN Convention on Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). Education systems that are designed to be inclusive, equitable and empowering can help build inclusive societies. The key to bringing about change and achieving social justice resides in the dynamic and natural relationship between education and society. By empowering schools to become inclusive, a large-scale impact can be created on all learners, with and without disabilities. Schools are microsystems and positive changes in these systems impacts the society at large. This project ‘UNNATI’ is envisaged on this rationale.

The goal of the Project:
Improve the school ecosystem through inclusion and support for children with disability (CwD). Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
