Job Description

Roles of Plant Head in a Garments Company

  • Act as the overall leader of the factory, responsible for planning, executing, and controlling all plant activities.
  • Ensure smooth functioning of production, quality, maintenance, HR, and compliance departments.
  • Align plant operations with organizational goals in terms of productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
  • Act as the key communication link between the management/head office and the factory teams.
  • Drive a culture of discipline, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities of Plant Head

1. Production & Operations

  • Plan and execute daily/weekly/monthly production schedules to meet buyer deadlines.
  • Monitor productivity (line efficiency, SMV, output) and ensure optimal use of manpower and machines.
  • Minimize downtime, bottlenecks, and wastage in the production process.
  • Introduce lean manufacturing practices, time & motion studies, and cost-saving initiatives.

2. Quality Assurance

  • Ensure adherence to buyer quality standards and minimize rejection/returns.
  • Implement in-line and final inspection systems.
  • Foster a zero-defect mindset and promote continuous improvement in quality systems.

3. Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with labor laws, buyer code of conduct, social audits, and environmental standards.
  • Oversee health, safety, and security of workers inside the factory.
  • Maintain proper documentation for audits and statutory requirements.

4. People Management

  • Supervise departmental heads (Production, IE, QA, HR, Maintenance, Stores, etc.).
  • Motivate and train employees to improve efficiency and reduce attrition.
  • Handle conflicts, grievances, and disciplinary matters effectively.
  • Ensure smooth coordination between management and worker unions (if applicable).

5. Cost & Resource Management

  • Control production cost, wastage, and overtime.
  • Optimize resource utilization (manpower, fabric, trims, machines, utilities).
  • Track budget vs. actual and implement cost-saving measures.

6. Maintenance & Infrastructure

  • Ensure preventive and breakdown maintenance of machines and factory infrastructure.
  • Plan capacity expansion, new machinery installation, and technology up gradation.

7. Reporting & Coordination

  • Report plant performance (production, quality, efficiency, cost, absenteeism) to senior management.
  • Participate in buyer meetings, audits, and virtual factory evaluations.
  • Provide insights to management for strategic planning and growth.

Preferred candidate profile

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, industrial management, logistics, or related field.
  • 10-12 years of experience in Garments industry.
  • Knowledge of Garment processes and quality control standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
