Job Description


The Patent Engineer will manage our patent portfolio, provide transparent overviews to the organization, detect possible infringements and evaluate the performance of the organization in the field of patents (KPI). Further, he will handle patent screening, drafting and intellectual property advisory, with a strong understanding of patent. The responsibilities will include reviewing technical and scientific documents, competitors patent portfolios and identifying relevant information in the field of IP. The role involves working closely with inventors and R&D teams to manage end-to-end patent processes.

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Collaborate with R&D teams to identify patentable innovations
  • Conduct comprehensive searches to identify existing technology relevant to a specific patent application
  • Review and analyze patent documents, including granted patents and patent applications, to assess their scope, claims, and technical content
  • Analyze the patent landscape within the compressor industry to identify trends, competitors, and opportunities
  • Perform Freedom-to-Operate searches to help assess potential legal risks and determine if they can operate within a particular technology space without infringing on existing patents
  • Recapitulate complex compressor related scientific concepts and explain them in terms understandable to patent attorneys.
  • Draft patent applications and technical descriptions in collaboration with inventors and patent attorneys
  • Analyze competitor patents and emerging technologies to provide strategic intellectual property insights
  • Stay updated on patent laws, regulations, and industry trends

Education/ experience / languages:

  • An advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Knowledge of the relevant compressor industry or oil & gas is an advantage
  • At least 5 years of profound experience in the field of intellectual property in a patent department or patent law firm
  • Trained patent engineer is an advantage
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Capable of handling independent correspondence with patent lawyers, other professionals and staff within the company

Special requirements:

  • Intercultural competence
  • Good understanding of technical drawings
  • Adept at using computers and other forms of technology related to the job
  • Knowledge of the relevant mechanical industry codes/standards e.g. ASME, API, FKM etc. is an advantage
  • Solid knowledge of mandatory regulations and legal requirements

  • KPIs as defined for the department (Productivity, First Time Right, On Time Delivery)
  • Customer orientation
  • Adherence to process
  • Speed and accuracy of the proposed solutions
  • Contribution to process improvement activities e.g. guidelines, process document, procedures etc.
